ESSENTIAL STANDARDS OF QUALITY AND SAFETY: Make sure children using Dental services are as safe as possible Risks are managed Children’s human rights are respected All Dental staff know how to recognise possible abuse and neglect of children All Dental staff know what to do if they have concerns

3. Regulation 11: ‘The registered person must make suitable arrangements to ensure service users are safeguarded against the risk of abuse’ WHAT DO THE REGULATIONS SAY?

4. Dental staff understand what is meant by the abuse or neglect of children and are able to recognise it Know what to do if concerned a child may be abused or neglected, or if a child, parent/carer discloses abuse to them Protect children using the Dental service from unlawful or excessive restraint or control WHAT DOES THIS MEAN IN PRACTICE?

5. Sexual abuse Physical, psychological or emotional ill treatment Neglect or acts of omission which cause harm or place at risk of harm Theft, misuse or misappropriation of property of money WHAT IS MEANT BY ABUSE?

Children will be protected from abuse or the risk of abuse The welfare of children will be safeguarded and promoted Dental staff will identify and prevent abuse happening in a service Dental staff will respond appropriately when abuse is suspected or is likely to occur WHAT SHOULD CHILDREN USING DENTAL SERVICES EXPERIENCE?

7. Professional standards exist relating to child protection/safeguarding children from harm It is recognised that the dental team are in a position to recognise or hear something which causes them concern about a child There is an existing ethical responsibility to know about local child protection/safeguarding children procedures and follow them (Standards for dental professionals, GDC 2005). WHAT DOES THE BDA SAY?

Safeguarding children/child protection should be included in the Practice Induction Programme A Safeguarding Children Policy to be in place clearly explaining how to recognise the abuse and neglect of children, and what to do if there are concerns about the welfare of a child Ensure all staff understand the link between dental neglect and the wider neglect of children’s welfare All staff will understand the need to take advice and to work with other professionals when there are concerns about a child’s welfare All staff will know how to find the Dorset Poole and Bournemouth Safeguarding Children procedures WHAT DO DENTAL PRACTICES NEED TO DO?

The Children Act 1989 and Children Act 2004 Particularly Section 11 of the Children Act 2004 with a duty to pay due regard to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children Working Together to Safeguard Children 2010 The Intercollegiate Document 2006 (advises on appropriate staff training required) RELEVANT LAW AND STATUTORY GUIDANCE INCLUDES

All staff working in a Healthcare setting should be trained at Level 1 All staff in regular contact with children, young people and parents should train at Level 2 All staff working predominantly with children , young people and parents should train at Level 3 (Intercollegiate Document 2006) TRAINING
