Objectives: • Students will be able to identify, label and locate the land acquired by the United States during Manifest Destiny. • Students will use this program to gain a deeper understanding of the conflicts within this United States domestic policy. • Evaluate Manifest Destiny and determine if this policy was justified.

  5. Causes: Americans accept Manifest Destiny. As East becomes more crowded, Americans want more land. The West contains furs, lumber, and precious metals. Effects: The U.S. wars with Mexico. Natives are pushed off their land. (again) The U.S. extends from the Atlantic to the Pacific! Causes and Effects

Polk. • Wanted California and New Mexico territories… no matter what! • This would guarantee a clear U.S. passage to the Pacific. • Fulfill Manifest Destiny! • Remember the Alamo! • Texans barricade an old missionary, the Alamo, as Santa Anna and the Mexican army attempt to enter..

The Annexation of Texas • The unarmed Americans were able to hold off the Mexican army for 12 days! • Eventually Santa Anna and his army break through and defeat the Americans. • Although this is a Mexican victory, this buys Americans much needed time! • The Alamo becomes a symbol of American heroism! • A Moral Victory! • Texas is annexed by the United States – Dec 29, 1845.

California • Eyed for its access to the Pacific Ocean • Fulfillment of Manifest Destiny! • So… how are we gonna get it? • Polk offers Mexico $ to buy territory. • Mexico refuses. • Polk’s Plan: • Polk decided to use force to fulfill our destiny! • Instigates Mexico into a war! • Mexico Cession: • U.S. gets California and New Mexico. • Mexico gets $15 million dollars!
