John Muir: Scottish-American naturalist and preservationist • Scottish-born American naturalist, author, and early advocate of preservation of wilderness in the United States. • He is today referred to as the "Father of the National Parks”. • He petitioned the U.S. Congress for the National Park • bill that was passed in 1890, establishing both Yosemite • and Sequoia National Parks.

  7. Co-founder of Sierra Club America's largest and most influential grassroots environmental organization. Inspired by nature, the organization has 1.4 million volunteers, working together to protect the communities and the planet

As early as 1876, Muir urged the federal government to adopt a forest conservation policy. • Although initially finding common ground in the ideas of forest protection put forth by Gifford Pinchot, a pioneer of U.S.forestry and conservation, Muir’s views ultimately diverged. Whereas Pinchot supported the sustainable use of resources within national forests.

  9. Muir influenced the large-scale conservation program that was initiated by Pres. Theodore Roosevelt, who in 1903 accompanied Muir on a camping trip to the Yosemite region. • In 1908 the government established Muir Woods National Monument in Marin county, Calif. Muir’s work was also influential in the establishment of Mount Rainier National Park (1899) in Washington state and Grand Canyon National Park (1919) in Arizona.

During his lifetime John Muir published over 300 articles and 12 books • He not only led the efforts to protect forest areas and have some designated as national parks, but his writings gave readers a conception of the relationship between "human culture and wild nature as one of humility and respect for all life”.
