  1. Student Council Presentation to the Academy Council 23rd January 2014

  2. Who Are We? One boy and one girl is elected from each of the Key Stage 2 classes at the start of each school year. Our Chair of the Student Council this year is Kyle Tasker (6R). He is also our Head boy and one of our librarians. Our Student Council also has a secretary (Liam Tasker), Treasurer (Alfie Barr) and Deputy Chair (Darci Johnson). As well as the children, Mrs Turner and Mr Gillyon attend the Student Council Meetings. Although children in the Foundation Stage and key Stage 1 do not attend meetings, Student Councillors visit their classrooms after every meeting to share with them what has been discussed and to ask for their ideas and suggestions.

  3. When, How Often & Where Do We Meet? The Student Council meets every other Wednesday afternoon during term time. We meet here in the Conference Room after school and our meetings run until 4pm.

  4. What is our mission at OAN? • This year our student council is aiming to do the following: • Be a strong voice for all the students at OAN • Listen to the concerns, questions and suggestions that our class share with us and bring these to the Student Council meetings • Help to raise money for the Academy (and help to spend it, too!) • Represent the Academy at important events locally and nationally (for example, in the Summer Term our Student Council is visiting the House of Parliament) • To help us carry out our role as Student Councillors we each have a Student Councillor Handbook to explain the special duties and tasks we are expected to carry out (we’ll pass a couple of these around).

  5. Student Survey: What do the students tell us about life at OAN? Here’s a few of the survey results… (NFER Survey, December 2013)

  6. So, what’s been happening at OAN this school year?

  7. Take Over Day - 22 November 2013 On Take Over Day, the children were encouraged to learn about the world of work and to follow adults around as they carry out their everyday work duties. We held a writing competition, asking students to say who they would like to be for the day…and why. Over 40 students were winners and got their wish, to be that person for the day and see just what sort of jobs they do!

  8. Five lucky winners had the opportunity to be Principal for a day with Mr Gillyon. They helped out with the day’s assembly, visited all the classes during the day and also visited the Children’s Centre.

  9. Take Over Day, November 2013… just a few of the lucky winners of our Take Over Day writing competition… XXX

  10. Overdrive Online Library Our new online digital library has been up and running since September. Students can login and download and borrow over 1800 ebooks and audiobooks… and best of all, it’s free! http://oasisacademynunsthorpe.lib.overdrive.com

  11. After-School Homework Clubs In September we introduced an after-school homework club, based in the ICT Suite, running between 3.15pm and 4.15pm Monday to Thursday each week. The homework club timetable is as follows: Monday – Years 5 & 6 Tuesday – Years 1 & 2 Wednesday – Years 5 & 6 Thursday – Years 3 & 4 This is very useful if you don’t have a quiet place to finish off homework at home or if you’d like some adult help with your homework!

  12. Book Week Competition Winners As part of Children’s Book Week we ran two great competitions. The first one was a reading recital, with a copy of David Walliams’ new book, ‘Demon Dentist’ going to the top performer in each year group. The winners for this competition were: Year 1 - Connor Kendall Year 2 – Chloe Holmes Year 3 - Ashton Price Year 4 – Neo Maddison Year 5 - Caitlin White Year 6 - SabihaZaman If you’re a big fan of David Walliams’ books, head on over to his website: http://www.worldofwalliams.com.

  13. To coincide with the launch of our digital library, we ran a 50-question quiz on the ebooks and audiobooks to be found on this new website, an important part of our growing library service. We had nearly a hundred entries and over twenty five students scored higher than 45 out of 50. Six students scored full marks. Their names went into a hat and one lucky winner’s name was drawn from it….Charlotte Taylor. She took home a brand new Kindle Fire. The other five students with full marks received a champion learner’s baseball cap and a purple power star performer badge!

  14. Michael Morpurgo Month – November 2013 November 2013 was Michael Morpurgo Month. Right across the academy we explored the many fantastic works of this famous children’s author. Each day during November, on the author’s website, there were also new activities and resources to explore: www.michaelmorpurgo.com.

  15. Michael Morpurgo Month As part of Michael Morpurgo Month we ran a special competition quiz to see just how much our students know about Morpurgo’s many wonderful novels. Just 5 students scored full marks and won a purple power star! Their names also went into a hat and one lucky winner, Bethany Lamb, also won a brand new Kindle Fire!

  16. Peter and the Wolf… Recently, our key stage 2 students were given a special sneak preview of extracts from ‘Peter & The Wolf’, which was later performed at the Grimsby Minster. It was great to hear the musical ensemble play together and to learn about Peter’s adventure.

  17. Anti-Bullying Week: ‘The B Word’… During Anti-Bullying Week our older students watched a wonderful theatre company performance of the ‘The B Word’; some of the students also got up on stage and took part!

  18. Reading Afternoon… Our recent reading afternoon was great fun! Our younger students made their own shoebox book libraries and we also welcomed lots of community volunteers into the Academy to hear the students read and talk about their favourite authors.

  19. Remembrance Day Our remembrance day this year was very memorable, with a great talk from Major Hough and a visit for some of our students to the Cenotaph. We also took part in the 2-minutes silence in our hall…

  20. Tree Planting… This term we have been busy planting trees along one edge of our academy field. This will give our students some much-needed shade in the Summer months…. once the trees have grown a little! Many thanks to all our volunteer planters, big and small!

  21. Year 3 Ukulele Lessons with Mr Rogers… Since September our Y3 students have been learning how to play the ukulele with Mr Kev Rogers. The ukuleles come in lots of really snazzy colours and look a bit like a guitar that has somehow shrunk in the wash!

  22. Year 3 Cookery Sessions in the Children’s Centre… Our Y3 students have been learning how to cook and how to eat healthily. Working with the Food for Fitness Team, and with Mrs Harrison and Mrs Mercer, they’ve created some wonderfully tasty meals that are good for you, too! A big thank you to the Children’s Centre for letting us use your super training kitchens!

  23. Operation Christmas Child 2013… A big thank you to everyone who helped this year with our Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Appeal (thank you Mrs Stamp, we know you filled several boxes!)
