  2. Grammar Notes for Test Identify Sentences Identify the four types of sentences Identify Complete Subjects and Predicates Identify Simple Subjects and Predicates

  3. A sentence is a group of words that contain a complete thought.Example:We are going to have a grammar test tomorrow.

  4. Four types of sentences: Declarative sentence makes a statement or tells about something and ends with a period. Example: We are having a grammar test tomorrow. Imperative sentence gives a command or tells you to do something and ends with a period. Example: Please close the door. Interrogative sentence asks a question and ends with question mark. Example: Do you like scary movies? Exclamatory sentences shows strong excitement or emotion. Sometimes they begin with a question marker but do not ask a question. Example: What a beautiful day! Stop, take your hands off me!

  5. Subjects and Predicates The complete subject of a sentence names someone or something. The subject may be one word, or it may be more than one word. Example: The little boy likes to eat cookies. The complete tells what the subject is or does. The predicate may be one word, or it may be more than one word. Example: The little boy likes to eat cookies.

  6. Simple Subject The simple subject is the main word in the complete subject. Sometime the complete subject and the simple subject are the same. Example: The little girls are having a great time. Nancy is walking to work. Note: The complete subject is underlined and the simple subject is in bold type.

  7. Simple Predicates The simple predicate is the main word in the predicate. The simple predicate is always a verb. Example: The little boy likes to eat cookies. Founder’s Day is so much fun. Note: The complete predicate is underlined and the simple predicate is in bold type.
