    3. Introduction Purpose & Objectives Highlight and summarize some of the Low Income Programs and Initiatives of selected electric utilities. Communicate corporate philosophies and/or initiatives concerning and Low Income Programs. Share information that may be of assistance in enhancing existing programs and services to help those in need. Provoke discussion that recognizes the importance of electricity to the users quality of life, and spur further research and local actions of conference attendees.

Selected Electric Utilities Overview Duke Energy Electric Service territory: Carolinas, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio, the service area covers approximately 47,000 square miles in the Midwest and Southeast. Customers Served: approximately 3.9 million electric customers Background Information Interesting to note that Duke Power, just a few years ago only served the southeast and the change and growth that has occurred with them amassing three additional territories and a few million more customers under Duke Energy umbrella.     21. Noteworthy Findings from Information According to the Dept. Of Energy, 14-20% of the gross income of low-income families accounts for their energy bills. Community Outreach Programs including Food Drives, Seniors Programs, Company- Sponsored Employee Volunteerism, Money Management Programs, Customer Medical Equipment Programs and Grant Programs to Community Organizations for Low-Income Activities are just some of the ways utilities are doing all they can to support the Low-Income population. Through partnerships and collaborations with government and private agencies utilities are demonstrating industry commitment to assist in empowering the Low-Income populations to self-sufficiency over energy consumption and management.     22. In Summary… A cursory review of the five selected utilities provided an opportunity to compare program offerings. Communicate the breadth of Low Income Initiatives and Actions being executed. Highlight and share workable ideas/actions to enhance existing programs. Promote further exploration of ways to best meet the needs of this population .
