  8. The first year of college is a time of transition…. • First child off to college? • Things are different for student than in high school • living arrangements, course schedules, sleep schedules • Things are also different for parents and families

  9. How you can best help your student to be successful • Help your student to be a good self-advocate. • We will almost always want to speak with the student when a concern is raised. • The Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) sets some limits regarding communication from us to you.

  10. Ways to help your student transition academically • Help your child to know their supports. Encourage them to • Get to know professors • Ask for help when needed • Email or make appointment to see Professors • Form study groups • Utilize resources—peer tutoring, time management classes, note taking classes, ZAM, SNA peer mentors, Public Health Club, Social Work Meetings, Men in Nursing Club

  11. Ways to help your student transition outside the classroom • Encourage your student to join a group or club. • Remind your student to use resources and social supports • Be patient and supportive regarding the transition process. • Sometimes listening is the most important thing you can do.

  12. What would you do? • Your student calls in tears, saying they just bombed their first A & P exam. The test wasn’t fair. The professor only tested on the book, not the lectures.

  13. What would you do? • You’ve booked a ski trip for the Christmas holidays and your student calls and says they have a final scheduled at the same time as your flight.

  14. What would you do? • You’ve had death in the family and need your student to fly home immediately.

  15. What would you do? • Your senior year nursing student reports that they’ve been put on the night shift for their senior capstone experience.

  19. Major/School Requirements (Nursing) • FYE • ENW 100 • BI 107 + Lab(Human Anatomy and Physiology) • Language • CH 84+Lab/MA 16 (or higher) • HI/PH/RS Orientation Tier

  22. Math Placement • The Math Department places students into a math course based on high school math background and academic interest • If badge says “See Math Advisor” or if they have questions about their placement, students can see a math advisor (student leaders can take you to the advisor)

  23. Language Placement • Language placement was determined by score on the placement test (or by background if Latin/Greek) • Student badges include the student’s “language placement” and the student’s “intended language of study” • If you want to study a new language register for the first semester section of that language (i.g. CI 110) • Can discuss your language placement with an advisor

  24. If you plan to study abroad….. Don’t register for the social sciences (save those for your study abroad experience)

  25. AP/College Credit Policies • If took the test senior year, then the results aren’t in (arrive mid-July) • Once processes Academic Support and Retention will contact all students who require a schedule change due to AP credit. • Pending scores, register for other major/core courses. • Please contact AP College Board to verify that their scores will be sent to Fairfield University. • No AP credit for tier 1—will be accepted as elective; can accept AP credit for tier 2

  26. Student Badge • Contains all the key information you need for registration • Pre-assigned to a First Year Experience (FYE) Seminar (indicated on badge) • Math placement • Language placement • Student athletes –practice schedules • Nursing: indicates if you will have CH first or second semester

  27. Academic Planning Forms • Students are to complete the form during today’s session • Need to be reviewed and signed by an advisor • Bring the form with you to registration on Day 2
