  1. So what do you need to know? NO test on this unit speaker--person or object talking in a poem stanza--the sections a poem is divided into (like paragraphs) figurative language--phrases that mean more than the literal sound devices--using language to create interesting sounds in a text rhyme--same end sounds rhythm--the beat of a poem refrain--repetition in poetry onomatopoeia--words that create the sound they mean when the word is said aloud What other terms do you think are important? Do you remember how to analyze a poem?

  2. Let's look at the poem "Daisies" together--this is on a handout for you, so you are to mark it as I mark it. On the next slide, read the poem silently and then when I click play you will see what I would mark as a starting point to understanding the poem. You should make notes in the margin about the speaker, the setting, and the literal events in the poem in order to help you figure out the metaphorical--drawing pictures is helpful!! Read it at least 3 times!! Then you will discuss it as a class.

  3. Daisies by Evaleen Stein At evening when I go to bed I see the stars shine overhead; They are the little daisies white That dot the meadow of the Night. And often while I'm dreaming so, Across the sky the Moon will go; It is a lady, sweet and fair, Who comes to gather daisies there. For, when at morning I arise, There's not a star left in the skies; She's picked them all and dropped them down Into the meadows of the town.

  4. How does the speaker feel about daytime? What about nighttime? What about nature in general? Put all this together and find the theme, or message, of the poem--what is the poet trying to tell us with this poem?

  5. Now do the next poem on the sheet remembering to look at each "sentence." Hint: each season and month is personified--that's why there is dialogue. Consider them as characters.

  6. Summer is Coming by Dora Goodale "Summer is coming!" the soft breezes whisper; "Summer is coming!" the glad birdies sing. Summer is coming - I hear her quick footsteps; Take your last look at the beautiful Spring. Lightly she steps from her throne in the woodlands: "Summer is coming, and I cannot stay; Two of my children have crept from my bosom: April has left me but lingering May. "What tho' bright Summer is crownèd with roses. Deep in the forest Arbutus doth hide; I am the herald of all the rejoicing; Why must June always disown me?" she cried. Down in the meadow she stoops to the daisies, Plucks the first bloom from the appletree's bough: "Autumn will rob me of all the sweet apples; I will take one from her store of them now." Summer is coming! I hear the glad echo; Clearly it rings o'er the mountain and plain. Sorrowful Spring leaves the beautiful woodlands, Bright, happy Summer begins her sweet reign.
