  1. ISAIAH 716 BC Ch 20

  2. Assyria Timeline Four kings of Judah are included: Uzziah (good), Jotham (OK), Ahaz (horrible), and Hezekiah (good) In this segment, we have Hezekiah, who straddled the reigns of Sargon and Sennacherib

  3. Isaiah 20 v.1 (read) Sargon had General Tartan in Ashdod subduing the Philistines, and his other generals, Rabshakeh and Rabsaris were also menacing places like Lachish, nearby. Assyria was on the prowl in the neighborhood, and God is using Isaiah to show Judah not to rely on Egypt or Ethiopia for help. See II Kings 18:13-25

  4. Isaiah 20

  5. Isaiah 20

  6. Isaiah 20 Vv2-6 (read)

  7. Isaiah 20 • V2 sackcloth that he “normally” wore was one of the badges of a prophet • -no frills • -no attachment to the world • “Hey, dressed like this, you know I’m ‘all-in’ with this message” • Taking off the sackcloth means “I’ve got nothing to hide” • The prophet in rough clothes, or naked, also indicates seriousness • Vv3-4 This is a message about Egypt and Ethiopia • But it is mainly to Judah. Like Jeremiah 100 years later, God is saying “Don’t trust in Egypt to save you” • Why? Because God is going to let them be humiliated by Assyria

  8. Isaiah 20 V6 “How shall we escape?” God has the answer: “Trust in God; stay put; allow yourselves to be tested; then watch God at work!” II Kings 19 (read it) See also Isaiah 37

  9. Isaiah 20 II Kings 19, Isaiah 37 Sennacherib’s Defeat By Rubens c. 1616
