  2. WP objectives The Work Package objectives are to ensure all the project high-level co-ordination activities, and to explore long term sustainability, international co-operation and liaisons with other disciplines. WP2-1 – Project overseeing • Defines the project programme • Oversees the project development and monitors the progress • Oversees the scientific aspects of the project WP2-2 – European co-operation and articulation with the national level • Manages the participation of the Euro-VO members which are not partners in the project • Manages the liaisons with the policy level (European Commission, Astronet, national and intergovernmental agencies and the policy makers in the partner countries) • Explores the extension of the astronomical VObs community to other European countries WP2-3 – Liaisons with other disciplines • Liaises with other EC-funded projects in “neighbouring” disciplines to explore possible co-operations WP2-4 – Strategy definition • Explores the different aspects of long term sustainability of the project Françoise Genova, EuroVO-ICE coordinator,2

  3. WP deliverables Françoise Genova, EuroVO-ICE coordinator,3

  4. WP2-1 Project overseing • Overall leadership and planning • « Light » but effective management, as explained in WP1 • Activities followed the initial DoW, with some adjustments discussed with the partners • Scientific guidance of the project • SAC meeting organised on 10 February 2011 • Previous SAC meeting June 2010 so M3 postponed from October 2010 to February 2011 Françoise Genova, EuroVO-ICE coordinator,4

  5. WP2-2 European co-operation and articulation with the national level • Participation in Board, in WP activities • No formal Board meetings, but consultation with and active participation of ESA, GAVO, SVO • SAC members from Euro-VO partners • Invitations to participate in Hands-On meeting widely distributed and participants from non partner countries funded by the project • Petr Skoda (Czech Republic) and several SVO participants funded by CNRS and ESO to participate in IVOA Naples meeting Françoise Genova, EuroVO-ICE coordinator,5

  6. WP2-3 Liaisons with other disciplines • Participation of M. Allen in Europlanet Colloquium and of F. Genova, F. Pasian and C. Arviset in Aspera Workshop (Particle physics) • Participation of VAMDC and HELIO/Europlanet community in EuroVO-ICE Technology Forums and IVOA Interops • ASPIC proposal to Call 9 two slides provided by Andy Françoise Genova, EuroVO-ICE coordinator,6

  7. Interdisciplinary discussions • Technical and policy discussions held with representatives of HELIO and Europlanet initiatives • Both commonalities and differences identified in technical issues and science requirements • HELIO already implementing some EuroVO technologies : VOTable, Registry • Identified likely areas of shared progress : data discovery, tool interoperability • Agreed intent to submit joint proposal Françoise Genova, EuroVO-ICE coordinator,7

  8. ASPIC proposal • Astronomy, Solar, and Planetary Infrastructure Co-ordination • Goals : • Maintain international leadership on the Global VO scene • Set up concrete collaborations with neighbouring disciplines • Progress towards a common data infrastructure in the long term • Submitted to Nov 2010 to Data Infrastructures Call 9 • Six partners representing Euro-VO, HELIO, and Europlanet • Size : €5.7m over 4.5 years • Not successful, but intentions to collaborate remain Françoise Genova, EuroVO-ICE coordinator,8

  9. WP2-4 Strategy definition • General landscape: High Level Expert Group on Scientific Data (2010) and FP8 preparatory meetings • Specific landscape: Call 8 and Call 9 • Call 9 better adapted for interdisciplinary aspects (ASPIC) • Sustainability aspects assessed on a short time scale for a Design Study proposal to Call 8: Euro-VO Design Study (EuroVO-DS) Françoise Genova, EuroVO-ICE coordinator,9

  10. Euro-VO DS (1) • Follow-up project from the identification of the VO as an important infrastructure of astronomy by the Astronet ERA-NET Roadmap • Goal : Formulate a conceptual design of a sustainable Euro-VO • Close collaboration with Astronet which provides all the contact points with European national funding agencies (well beyong Euro-VO usual partners) Françoise Genova, EuroVO-ICE coordinator,10

  11. Interactive map showing the partners, associate and forum members http://www.astronet-eu.org/ Françoise Genova, EuroVO-ICE coordinator,11

  12. EuroVO-DS (2) • Increase awareness among and gather requirements from the scientific community (users) and data provider communities • Define the technical needs to maintain the VO framework • Requirements for sustainable Outreach towards education and the general public • Assess and quantify all elements pertaining to sustainability • Propose a governance and financial model The proposal failed but the analysis of what has to be done remains Françoise Genova, EuroVO-ICE coordinator,12

  13. The European view • Collaborative Global Infrastructure • Should allow a high level of diversity • « Horizontal »/ « vertical », top-down/bottom-up aspects • Astronomy remains at the forefront Françoise Genova, EuroVO-ICE coordinator,13
