Recruiting New Members • Why do people join organizations? • To meet new people • To have fun • To gain experience to add to resume • To develop skills • To make a difference • Get everyone involved in the recruiting process • Schedule a special welcoming event or ceremony for new members • Have a group orientation

  4. Recruiting New Members • Take advantage of “official opportunities” • Org. Fair, Tabling, Banners/Flyers • Hold informational meetings & events • Make your organization STAND OUT! • Personally discuss organization with those interested, make them feel special. • Don’t be afraid to do something different. • Recruitment isn’t just a beginning of the year activity.

  5. Motivation is: • The psychological feature that pushes one to action toward a desired goal • That which gives purpose and direction to behavior • Having the desire and willingness to do something

  6. Types of Motivation & Rewards • Intrinsic • Internal motivation such as a sense of accomplishment • Rewards that are built into the work itself like a chance to be creative or overcome a challenge • Extrinsic • External motivation such as a tangible reward • Rewards that are given for the work such as money, gifts or recognition

  7. So what does that mean? Good leaders know that motivated members are involved members! MOTIVATION = RETENTION Motivating, involving and rewarding your members means keeping your members.

  8. Let them eat Grapes! GRAPE Retention • Growth • Recognition • Achievement • Participation • Enjoyment

  9. Growth For members to have the chance to grow, they must be given opportunities to grow as a person. This can involve: • Working with others • Learning new skills • Working on challenging projects • Trusting them with important projects Enable Others To Act!

  10. Recognition Everyone likes to be recognized for the work they have done. Don’t forget to let your members know that they are appreciated for the work that they do. Ways to recognize members include: • Naming a “Member of the Month” • Writing thank-you notes • Giving small tokens of appreciation • End of the Year/Semester Celebrations

  11. Recognition • Recognition must be personal: get to know your members and what they enjoy • Pay attention to your members • Use variety in your recognition • Make recognition public • Don’t be stingy with your thank yous

  12. Achievement There is nothing better than working on a project from start to finish and gaining a sense of accomplishment. Your members need to feel that they played a part in the overall achievement of the group. Share your members achievements by: • Presenting them with a certificate or award • Secure an article in the student newspaper • Share positive feedback from students and administrators with the whole group Create a team mentality: when the team succeeds, everyone succeeds.

  13. Participation No matter how busy we all are, everyone needs time to socialize. Being a member of an organization is a great way to participate in out-of-class activities and make new friends. Keep your members participating by: • Incorporating social activities in all of your meetings • Include ice-breakers or team building activities to allow new and old members to socialize • Have members coordinate social events not related to organization business

  14. Enjoyment There’s nothing better than hanging out with a group of people you like and planning events you enjoy! Help your members enjoy themselves by: • Planning fun activities • Providing treats at meetings • Finding time just to hang out together

  15. Reflection • What are some of the ways we can recruit new members? • Are we doing a good job of retaining our members? • How can we make our organization more fun? • What are some of the ways we can recognize and reward our members?
