  1. f/stop, Shutter Speed, & DOF Working with your camera

  2. Materials • 35mm camera with manual controls • 50mm or zoom lens • 1 roll of B & W, ISO 100, 24 exposure, film • 18% Gray Card • Shoot each situation twice, but only use 1 roll of film • Optional: • Yellow; red; orange; polarizing filter • As much as you can, fill the lens with your subject

  3. The Exercise • Keep track of each exposure • Note f/stop, shutter speed, and view • Partner with 1 or more students • Each pair/group needs at least 1 gray card • If shooting in low light you might need a tripod

  4. Shutter Speeds • #1 • Set your shutter at 1000 or your fast speed below 1000 • Meter with your gray card • Get the best focus you can • Photograph a car passing or person waling briskly from right to left or left to right • shoot • Outcome • The fast shutter will freeze the scene

  6. Shutter #2 • Reset your shutter to 1/30th (30) • Check meter with gray card if there are any changes • Focus, re-focus on the subject • Same photo as #1 except for shutter speed • shoot • Outcome • Print will have a blurred subject on purpose.

  8. Shutter #3 • Keep the shutter at 30 • Same situation except you will pan with the subject • shoot • Outcome • Subject in focus, background blurred

Outdoor Portrait • #1 • Try complete scene in sunlight or shade. • Try not to mix • Stand about 5 feet apart • Set your aperture wide open (f/2; f/2.8; f/4) • Meter with your gray card • Find the equivalent exposure for the required f/stop • Focus, re-focus on the subject • shoot • Outcome • Subject in focus, background blurred

  12. Portrait #2 • Move the subject about 15 feet away • Same shutter speed (f/2, f/2.8, f/4) • Meter with gray card • Focus, re-focus on the subject • Shoot • Outcome • Subject in focus. Some near objects blurred, background blurred

  14. Portrait #3 • Stay at 15 feet • Change aperture to f/11, f/16, or f/22. Use the smallest aperture available • Meter with your gray card • Focus, re-focus on the subject • Shoot • Outcome • Everything in focus

  16. Portrait #4 • Move back to 5 feet apart • Keep the aperture at f/11, f/16, f/22 • Meter with your gray card • Focus, re-focus on your subject • Shoot • Outcome • Everything in focus

  18. What is Due? • Day 1 in the darkroom • 1 8x10 contact sheet. If you metered with a gray card all thumbnails should appear the same • 1 8x10 from the shutter exercise. Avoid flaws in the print • Day 2 in the darkroom • 1 8x10 outdoor portrait using a contrast filter • Optional: Extra Credit. 1 additional 8x10 with contrast filter

  19. Grading • Total of 100 points plus extra credit • Contact sheet = 20 points (20 or more thumbnails appear clear • Shutter print = 35 points • Outdoor Portrait print with contrast filter = 45 points • Extra Credit print = 10 points
