  1. Factors which influence climate Today’s Aim - 1. To understand Mountain & Valley, Land & Sea Breezes and how mountains/oceans affect climate Agenda: Illustrate a 4 part illustration with explanation captions for the different types of breezes.

  2. In your journal… Draw a lava lamp, then discuss with your group why the lava rises and falls inside the lamp. Label your drawing to describe how it works. HINT: Think back to last year when you talked about how particles behave when they are heated or cooled!

  3. How Mountains that affect CLIMATE How is climate affected by mountains during the day differently than at night? Predict.

  4. Today’s Journey SPI 0507.8.2 Explain how mountains affect weather and climate. SPI 0507.8.1 Explain how oceans affect weather and climate.

  5. In this PowerPoint you are going to study the ways mountains & oceans affect climate. • Mountain and Valley Breezes • Ocean Breezes

  6. How Mountains Affect Weather & Climate Number 3 – Mountain Breezes and Valley Breezes

  7. Mountain Breeze –Valley Breeze Mountain and valley breezes are very similar to land and sea breezes which we will discuss next week. Remember – Air pressures try to equalize themselves through wind. High pressures move toward low pressures.

  8. During the day the surface of the mountain heats the air high up in the atmosphere quicker than the valley floor can. This creates a low pressure area near the top of the mountain. Wind moves from the valley where the air pressure is high to equalize this pressure.

  9. Day – Valley Breeze When the wind moves from the valley to the top of the mountain, this is called a valley breeze.

  10. During the night the mountain tops cool more quickly than the air in the valleys. This creates a high pressure area at the mountain top where the air becomes more densely packed.

  11. The wind changes direction and moves from the mountain top to the valley floor to equalize this high pressure.

  12. Mountain Breeze –Valley Breeze Most of the time we see valley breezes during the day, as winds blow from the valley up towards the mountains. During the night we see mountain breezes, as winds travel from the mountains, down towards the valleys.

  14. Which would heat up and cool down the fastest… * Sand or Water Discuss this question with your group for 1 minute and record your answers on a white board… Which one would heat up and cool down the fastest? Hint: Think about how much the ocean changes in temperature over the course of a year.

  15. Land and Sea Breezes

  16. Land BREEZE…

  17. Land Breezes At night the lands cools off faster than the sea. Cool air sinks creating an area of high pressure. Wind blows from the land to the sea.

  18. SEA BREEZE…

  19. Local Winds The land cools and heats faster than the ocean. Water holds heat longer than land, and takes longer to heat or cool. SEA BREEZE During the day, the land gets hotter faster than the water. The heated air rises, leaving behind an area of low pressure. Wind from the cooler sea blows in to take the place of that warmer air. These happen during the day!
