  1. “Making Conservation Work” Participant motivation in Conservation:The Cairngorms Water Vole Conservation Project Anna Evely , Xavier Lambin, Ioan Fazey, Michelle Pinard, University of Aberdeen 1. Introduction Motivated volunteers are key to the future of successful, sustainable conservation projects. The Cairngorms National Park is a key water vole area within the UK.  Its geography, low prey biomass and high game-keeper density make the area a defensible stronghold.  Protection of this area through a community-based project, utilising existing skilled workforce, as well as the wider residential and visiting community will help ensure protection of water voles is sustainable in the long term. This workforce along with paid officers will help to monitor the presence/absence of mink on mink rafts (which have a clay component to capture mink presence, by presence of prints, which can be replaced by a cage) and trap mink where present. Within the next three years we aim to provide a framework as to how conservation projects can increase their sustainability through improving community participation and motivation. • 3.
