  1. Conservation of Mass/Matter • What is matter? Matter is made of atoms. Matter has mass and takes up space (volume). • Why can’t it disappear? According to the Law, Matter cannot be created or destroyed, only rearranged. • Who was Antoine Lavoisier? A French chemist in the 1700s who published his results on various experiments on this Law. • How does this relate to chemical reactions and compounds? The mass of the reactants must ALWAYS equal the mass of the products.
