As highlighted in the message before the diary entries, Guevara undergoes a considerable amount of self-discovery in these early stages which sets the tone for how he will react to particular situations in the latter stages. • Guevara’s realisation that he is destined to travel is a vital self-discovery as it further encourages his travelling ambitions. “I know by now…that travelling is our destiny” expresses him coming to terms with what he wants to do in life.   4. The killing of the “ill-tempered dog” presents Guevara with the realisation of what he will do when faced with an instance of fear. (Renewed perspective about himself) • “I decided to remain where I was for fear of being knifed, just in case mirages were contagious in those parts” Page 53 • Awaking of new ideas – In San Martín de los Andes – “We made plans to build a laboratory in this place”. Page 45

  5. Cultural Discovery • As he crosses borders for the first time into Chile, Guevara uncovers the difference in nature between the people of his homeland Argentina and that of residence in Chile. He notes that surprisingly, the Chilean people are “exceedingly friendly people, were warm and welcoming wherever they went” as if people of this nature are generally unheard of to him. Page 56

Page 57 – Ernesto furthermore explains on the next page the cultural indigenous nature of the people of Valdivia and how his discovery of the indigenous was vital due to their scarcity over the majority of South America. He describes large portions of the port as being “foreign to me” meaning discovery of culture was present. • This indigenous nature of the particular area of Chile and Guevara’s statements of how hospitable the Chileans could imply how prevalent the Western influence is and the negative impact it holds over the true South American culture
