  1. Marcos 6 : 17 - 29 En aquel tiempo, Herodes había mandado apresar a Juan el Bautista y lo había metido y encadenado en la cárcel. Herodes se habla casado con Herodías, espo­sa de su hermano Filipo, y Juan le decía: "No te está permitido tener por mujer a la esposa de tu hermano". Por eso Herodes lo mandó encarcelar.

  2. Herodías sentía por ello gran rencor contra Juan y quería quitarle la vida, pero no sabía cómo, porque Herodes miraba con respeto a Juan, pues sabía que era un hombre recto y santo, y lo tenía custodiado. Cuando lo oíahablar, quedaba desconcertado, pero le gustaba escucharlo.

  3. La ocasión llegó cuando Herodes dio un banquete a su corte, a sus oficiales y la gente principal de Galilea, con motivo de su cumpleaños. La hija de Herodías bailó durante la fiesta y su balló les gustó mucho a Herodes y a sus invitados. El rey le dijo entonces a la joven: “Pídeme lo que quieras y yo te lo daré”. Y le juró·varias veces: “Te daré lo que me pidas, aunque sea Ia mitad de mi reino”.

  4. Ella fue a preguntarle a su madre: “¿Que le pido?” Su madre le contestó: “La cabeza de Juan el Bautista”. Volvió ella inmediatamente junto al rey y le dijo: “Quiero que me des ahora mismo, en una charola, la cabeza de Juan el Bautista”.

El Rey se puso muy triste, pero debido a su juramento y a los convidados, no quiso desairar a la joven, y enseguida mando a un verdugo que trajera la cabeza de Juan, El verdugo fue, lo decapitó en la cárcel, trajo la cabeza en una charola se la entrego a la joven y ella se la entregó a su madre.

  7. Mark 6 : 17 - 29 Herod was the one who had John the Baptist arrested and bound in prison on account of Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip, whom he had married. John had said to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife:”

  8. Herodias harbored a grudge against him and wanted to kill him but was unable to do so. Herod feared John, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man, and kept him in custody. When he heard him speak he was very much perplexed, yet he liked to listen to him.

  9. She had an opportunity one day when Herod, on his birthday, gave a banquet for his courtiers, his military officers, and the leading men of Galilee. Herodias’ own daughter came in and performed a dance that delighted Herod and his guests. The king said to the girl, “Ask of me whatever you wish and I will grant it to you.” He even swore many things to her, “I will grant you whatever you ask of me, even to half of my kingdom.”

  10. She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?” She replied, “The head of John the Baptist.” The girl hurried back to the king’s presence and made her request, “I want you to give me at once on a platter the head of John the Baptist.”

  11. The king was deeply distressed, but because of his oaths and the guests he did not wish to break his word to her. So he promptly dispatched an executioner with orders to bring back his head. He went off and beheaded him in the prison. He brought. In the head on a platter and gave it to the girl. The girl in turn gave it to her mother.

Aug. 29, 2007 In today’s gospel we see how John the Baptist, the greatest of the prophets, is rejected and put to death. Those who listened to him changed their lives for the better; those who rejected him got rid of him by killing him.

  15. We learn from John the Baptist how to admonish our fellow servants as equals. It does not matter whether Herod was the king. Chrysostom says he was a tyrant overthrowing the divine commands regarding marriage. With boldness John told him: “It is not lawful for you to have your brother Philip’s wife.” He did not shrink from the duty of chastising a brother, even though he risked his life in doing so (Concerning the Statutes 1.32).

  17. St. Ambrose notes (Concerning Virgins 3.6.27) how various sins were interwoven in this one vicious action of killing John the Baptist. A banquet of death is set out in royal luxury. The adulteress queen brings out her daughter, who dances immodestly. There is rash swearing in the midst of the luxurious feast. The king is trapped into fulfilling his oath. The queen, who has harbored a grudge against the prophet and wanted to kill him, sees her chance to do so, and does it.

  19. St. Chrysostom says it was the devil that set his trap, making it strong, and from the moment the oath was complete, he both set his snares and stretched his net on every side. The request was abominable, but she persuaded him, and he gave the order to curb John’s holy tongue. “He cut off the head but not the tongue” (Baptismal Instructions 10.26-27).

This goes to show that St. Bede (Homilies on the Gospels 2.23) is right. “If it should perhaps happen that we swear carelessly to something, which, if carried out, would have most unfortunate circumstances, we should be willing to change it in accord with wise counsel. There is an urgent necessity for us to break our oath, rather than turn to another more serious crime.”

  23. Esto indica que lo que dijo san Bede es cierto (en Homilías sobre Los Evangelios 2.23). Si sucede que alguien toma un juramento precipitado, y si se cumpliera, causaría asombrosas consecuencias, debemos estar listos para cambiarlo en acuerdo con consejo sabio.   24. The holy prophet John the Baptist sealed his words with his blood. It proved that he was authentic and real. He meant what he said, and he said what God inspired him to say, even though it cost him great suffering. His disciples came and took his holy body and laid it in a tomb.

  26. The Roman Catholic Church honors martyrs, of which John the Baptist was the first, by putting their relics on the altars. By this we follow the example of those early disciples, honoring the martyrs, remembering their victory, and following their teachings.

  28. To be a martyr is to be a witness. We testify that Jesus has come into the world to save us from our sins. We testify that he died and rose from the dead, and is still alive, present in our hearts, and in the Eucharist. We testify that he is worth living for, and dying for. We struggle to enter by the narrow gate.

  29. Ser un mártir es ser un testigo. Somos testigos de que Jesús ha venido al mundo a salvarnos de nuestros pecados. Somos testigos de que Jesús murió y se levanto de la muerte, y todavía esta vivo, presente en nuestros corazones, y en la Eucaristía. Somos testigos de que vale la pena vivir por Él, y morir por Él. Luchamos para entrar por la puerta angosta.

  30. “We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ” (2 Corinthians 10.5). Are we ready to stand firm on the word of God, like St. John the Baptist, and obey Christ in every thought? Or do we cut and run whenever the going gets tough? Good question.

  31. “Derribamos todo argumento y obstáculo orgulloso contra el conocimiento de Dios, y sometemos todo pensamiento para obedecer a Cristo” (2 Corintios 10.5). ¿Estamos listos para estar firmes en la palabra de Dios, como San Juan Bautista, y obedecer a Cristo en todos nuestros pensamientos?
