  1. REPORT ABET LEVEL 4 OCTOBER 2002 EXAMIINATION

  2. BACKGROUND • Third national examination in the W. Cape. • First time CASS included in final assessment. (50/50) • First time – 3 new electives written in W. Cape (AHC, AAAT, Tourism) • Full time HO and EMDC ABET staff. • No irregularities were observed during the examination.

  3. RESULTS • Increase in number of candidates writing the examination. (+239) • Percentage of registered candidates that sat to write the exam increased significantly. (+6.65%) • Pass rates in most learning areas significantly improved. (+12.80%)

  5. APPLIED AGRICULTURE AND AGRICULTURAL TECHNOLOGY • Content – range of US. • Business terminology • Practical application of learning area.

  6. ANCILLARY HEALTH CARE • Learners need to be trained to number their work properly. • They also need to be trained in writing essays.

  7. ARTS AND CULTURE • Question paper found to be more accessible to candidates than the June paper. • Still lack of general knowledge and understanding of technical terms used in different art forms.

  8. ECONOMIC AND MANAGEMENT SCIENCES • Terminology problems. • Important for the teachers to have competency in accounting for the specialised accounting sections.

  9. LLC: AFRIKAANS • Good results. • Weakness in creative writing. • Limited Afrikaans vocabulary in some candidates.

  10. LLC: ENGLISH • Improved results. • Attention should be paid to: • Use and purpose of visual media • Format, tone and register in transactional writing. • Comprehension of text.

  11. LLC: isiXHOSA • Candidates did extremely well. • Points of concern - lack of practice in creative writing - analysis of a poem

  12. LIFE ORIENTATION • Excellent pass rate • Matters of concern: - placement of learners - reading and understanding of questions. - exposure to analytical and interpretive questions

  13. MLMMS • Section A – ML • Section B – MMS • Aspects that require attention: • showing all calculations for problems. • Comprehension of texts and questions. • Calculation of averages • Drawing straight line graphs

  14. HUMAN AND SOCIAL SCIENCES • Improved results. • Concerns: • following instruction • Lack of understanding • Poor graph skills • Inability to express own opinion • Inadequate general knowledge.

  15. NATURAL SCIENCES • Concerns: • calculating averages from data. • Describing the difference between two things. • Providing answers of a length that is in keeping with the marks allocated.

  16. TECHNOLOGY • Vast improvement. • Type of paper set at national level was more appropriate than in the past. • Certain candidates still have difficulty in interpreting certain questions.

  17. SMALL, MEDIUM AND MICRO ENTERPRISES • Problem issues: • incorrect use of symbols • Developing business plans • Distinguishing between talents, skills and resources.

  18. TRAVEL AND TOURISM • First time that the learning area had been offered. • Candidates did not perform well in the essay questions and were unable to express themselves proficiently.
