  1. Silicon Valley Youth Bridge Strategic Vision and Goals 12/17/2013 BOD Meeting

  2. Agenda • Mission Statement • Vision/Direction • SMART Goals • Goals • Where we are / where we are going • Funnel • Strategy

  3. Mission Statement To promote academic excellence in the areas of math, critical thinking and logic, to foster positive social interactions and teamwork, and to provide an opportunity for a lifetime of learning, enjoyment and community by inspiring the next generation of bridge players.

  4. Vision/Direction • Creating lots of junior real bridge players • Having a tournament with hundreds of junior players • Inspiring others (in district, else where in ACBL) with our success • For junior we’d use the ACBL definition of aged 25 or under at the start of the calendar year

  5. SMART Goals • S: Specific • M: Measurable • A: Attainable • R: Relevant • T: Timebound

  6. GOALS

  7. Goal 1 (3-year) By September 30th 2016 at least 200 different juniors associated with Silicon Valley Youth Bridge will have played in at least one ACBL masterpoint event. This can include events at our parties.

  8. Goal 2 (3-year) By September 30th 2016 at least 100 different juniors associated with Silicon Valley Youth Bridge will have earned their first full masterpoint (having started with less than 1 masterpoint when first connecting with Silicon Valley Youth Bridge).

  9. Goal 3 (5-year) By September 30th 2018 at least 500 different juniors associated with Silicon Valley Youth Bridge will have been introduced to bridge basics.

  10. Goal 4 (5-year) By September 30th 2018 at least 200 different juniors associated with Silicon Valley Youth Bridge will become ACBL members (without us buying their membership, if we buy initial memberships, then this goal will be a renewal number goal).

  11. Goal 5 (6 year) At the 2019 Fall Nationals in San Francisco, at least 500 distinct juniors will play at least one session. This includes juniors who are not directly associated with Silicon Valley Youth Bridge (but our ripple effect and inspiration may help inspire some of those players).

  12. Where we are / Where we are going

  13. Where we are • Still mostly in an exploratory phase (what age groups, what programs, what works, what should be changed, new ideas, etc.) • Against Goal 3, we currently have had 177 different juniors in our schools programs (at least for 1 lesson). • Against Goal 5, the ACBL had 44 junior members play in Phoenix nationals (12 girls, 31 boys, 1 unknown). 17 of the 44 were 10-19, 27 of the 44 were 20-25 [those 27 will be too old to be juniors in the 2019 SF Nationals timeframe].

  14. Plan going forward • We should agree as a board that these goals seem appropriate • We should make sure we are collecting the right information to be able to measure these goals • We should measure where we are against each goal every quarter (~3 months, next time in March) • We should review the appropriateness of the goals every year and add/modify/remove goals as needed

  15. Funnel

  16. Funnel • We want to introduce kids to bridge, drive engagement with bridge, and produce bridge players. • In terms of goals: • Goal 3 is mostly about introduction. • Goals 1 then 2 and then 4 are about different types of engagement • Goal 5 (and a little 2 and 4) are about producing bridge players

  17. Strategy

  18. Strategy • Our current after school programs are mostly about that initial introduction and mostly leading to goal 3. • Our events are some about introduction and some about engagement and are mostly leading to goal 1. • As we consider other strategies we should evaluate which goals they help, and try to both increase the number of people who are introduced to our programs and also increase the percentage of people that are introduced that go all the way through to become bridge players, potentially counting for all of our goals.
