  2. Definition • Object which has been placed into orbit by human • sometimes called artificial satellites • Help forecast the weather, transfer telephone calls over the oceans, assist in the navigation of ship and aircraft, and support military activities.

History • Arthur C Clarke -first person to popularize the idea of using satellites • First artificial satellite - Sputnik 1 • Launched by the Soviet Union on 4 Oct 1957 • helped to identify the density of high atmospheric layers through measurement of its orbital change and provided data on radio-signal distribution in the ionosphere • Sputnik 2- launched on November 3, 1957 and carried the first living passenger into orbit

History • Explorer 1 - United States’ first satellite on January 31, 1958. • Malaysia has only got their first satellite in 1996 with the launched of MEASAT. • Both MEASAT-1 & 2 satellites were launched on Ariane rockets from Centre Spatial Guyanais at Kourou in French Guiana. • MEASAT is owned by Binariang and the owner of Maxis, the biggest mobile operator in Malaysia. In May 1994, BinariangSdn. Bhd of Kuala Lumpur and Boeing Satellite System signed a contract calling for the construction of the contraction of the Malaysia East Asia Satellite (MEASAT) system.
