  3. 1. Background Information • A podcast is a series of digital-media files which are distributed • over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback on • portable media players and computers. The feeds are usually • distributed using RSS or Atom protocols to the podcatching • client, i.e. an Apple I-Pod Player.* • Before you can podcast audio you need to • - produce/record a digital media file (speech recording, audio • recording, electronic music production, use of existing • digital audio content) • * http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Podcast

  5. 2. Recording Hardware • Digital MP3 Speech Recorder • Headset or ext. Microphone connected to PC/Laptop • Built-in Microphone of Laptop etc.

Recording/Editing Software • Windows Sound Recorder (Run\sndrec32.exe) • - quick and easy to use Windows software • - disadvantage: no mp3 Export, no editing • Audacity • - relatively easy to use free audio software for all OS • - MP3 Export, multi-tracks, Import diff. audio formats • Audio Editing • - requires MP3 library (Lame)

II) • If not available or reserved choose a • room w. little environmental noise • - Place microphone directly in front of • speaker • Place a little bit low to reduce the • sound of breathing

  9. 4. Production and Editing Audio • Music Format Examples • Use audio format MP3 for Internet • music distribution • - Remind the max. filesize/files in • Confluence (60 Mbyte?)

Producing a Podcast • Uploading the MP3 file(s) and creating an RSS feed • in Confluence (under construction) • Alternative: Jacobs University Mediaserver • Automatically creating an RSS 2.0 feed for • podacsting using Online Services or RSS generator • software • Testing the RSS 2.0 feed in Itunes

Conclusion • Producing a podcast is not a mysterie • Using Confluence could simplify the process of • generating RSS feeds • Work needs to be done on Confluence • Podcast Makro to fully enable podcasting • Alternatively Jacobs Mediaserver could be used for • storing MP3´s. Corresponding RSS 2.0 feeds can be • easily created using free Online Services or free • RSS generator software
