Chapter 43 Amines
Purpose • The object of this experiment is to identify an unknown amine or amine salt. First test to check solubility. Second experiment represents a Hinsberg test for distinguishing between primary, secondary and tertiary amines.
Hinsberg Test • In Hinsberg test, the sulfonamides are distinguishable because the derivative from a primary amine has an acidic hydrogen, which renders the resulting salt soluble in H2O. Whereas the sulfonamide from the secondary amine is insoluble.
Comments • Follow pp. 588-590(microscale). • Follow the lab handout for all experimental procedures. Wearing rubber gloves is necessary during this lab. You will work with toxic and corrosive compounds. • Use solubility and Hinsberg test to figure out the unknown structures.
Safety • Amines are toxic and have a characteristic smell: work in the hood.Do not swallow, do not inhale and avoid contact with eyes and skin. Wear gloves and handle with caution. • Benzenesulfonyl chlorideis corrosive, avoid contact with skin and eyes, wear gloves and goggles, use caution.
