Airbus successfully petitioned for an exemption to 14 CFR 61.77(a), allowing for Special Purpose Pilot Authorizations for ferry and delivery flights. The exemption, granted in 1999 and extended twice, benefits pilots and flight engineers employed by Airbus. A more flexible procedure is needed for temporary validation/conversion of ATPL or CPL/IR certificates to support new commercial jet transports. This issue has been discussed in FAA/JAA harmonization meetings, covering flight instruction, line flying, delivery/ferry flights, and flight demonstrations for sales support.
