  5. Why First Aid? • Employees in a range of industries are required to comply with National First-Aid Guideline Competency Standards as part of an industry qualification.

  6. First Aid First-aid units of competency common to qualifications across a range of training packages include: • HLTCPR201A Perform CPR • HLTFA201A Provide basic emergency life support • HLTFA301B Apply first aid • HLTFA302A Provide first aid in remote situation

  7. Why is it needed? Why is resource needed? First Aid training utilises texts such as, Australian Red Cross First Aid: Responding to Emergencies. • Texts provide critical information needed to achieve and maintain First-aid competency.

  8. Why is resource needed? First Aid texts are often characterised by: • Dense text and complex structure • Unfamiliar medical terminology • Illustrations and photographs that reflect situations, characters and contexts unfamiliar to many learners.

  9. Target group Who is the target group? Indigenous Australians: • Working or undertaking qualifications that include First Aid competencies • Living in regional or remote locations.

  10. Why this group? • Indigenous people living in regional and remote locations may: - use community dialects or non standard forms of English - have low levels of formal schooling - have low Core Skills - undertake First Aid competencies online without support.

  11. The resource Interactive CD ROM utilising: • Film- First Aid situations, language and communication processes • Learning – additional information related to the film scenarios • Practice and test activities

  12. The resource • Support material addressing the underpinning LLN skills of First Aid • Links to training package competencies – does not directly link to specific elements or performance criteria • Generic content should retain currency for approximately 3 years.

  13. Construction Traditional learning styles: • Strong oral culture • Use of narrative as means of knowledge transmission • Familiarisation with written text/language • Integration of culture into training delivery. (Dockery, Kraal)
