Acids, Bases, and pH. Acids. Produces H + in water forming H 3 O + ions (hydronium) Corrosive Sour Feels squeaky Conduct electricity: stronger the acid the more current Ex. Battery acid, oranges, coke, vinegar. Bases. Produces OH - (hydroxide) ions in water Corrosive Bitter, chalky

Acids • Produces H+ in water forming H3O+ ions (hydronium) • Corrosive • Sour • Feels squeaky • Conduct electricity: stronger the acid the more current • Ex. Battery acid, oranges, coke, vinegar
Bases • Produces OH- (hydroxide) ions in water • Corrosive • Bitter, chalky • Slippery • Conducts electricity; stronger the base the stronger the current • Ex. Milk, soap, cleaners, baking soda, bleach
Indicators • Indicates an acid or base • EX. pH paper, litmus paper, or red cabbage juice • Acids turn blue litmus paper red • Bases turn red litmus paper blue
pH Scale • pH scale measures H3O+ ions from 0-14 • 0 = strong acid • 6 = weak acid • 7 = neutral • 8 = weak base • 14 = strong base
Acid Rain • Plants and animals need water close to neutral = 7 • Pollution causes acid rain (>5.6) • More damage done to Roman ruins & pyramids in last century than in the last 2000 years
