  1. Setting Up Algebra Word Problems

  2. Instructions • Work with a partner • Number your paper from 1 – 16, leaving a couple of spaces for each problem • Under the correct number, write the problem • Below the word problem, translate it into an algebraic equation • Do not solve the equation • Draw an arrow and/or color code the word problem to show which statements correspond to the algebra

  3. Problem #1 Triple the original number, n, is 2700.

  4. Problem #2 The product of a number, y, and 5 is equal to 15.

  5. Problem #3 Four times the difference of a number, x, and 2 is 20.

  7. Problem #5The number of parts in inventory, p, minus 54 parts sold today is 320.

  8. Problem #6One-half, x, added to $50 is $262.

  9. Problem #7One hundred seeds divided by 5 rows equal n number of seeds per row.

  10. Problem #8A number, y, less than 50 is 82.

  11. Problem #9His base pay of $200 increased by his commission, x, is $500.

  12. Problem #10 Seventeen more than half a number, h, is 35.

  16. Problem #14Four times the sum of a number, y, and 10 is 48.

  17. Problem #15 We started with xnumber of students. When 5 moved away, we had 42 left.

  18. Problem #16A number, b, divided into 36 is 12.

  19. Answers • 3n= 2700 • 5y =15 • 4(x -2) = 20 • = 45 5. p – 54 = 320 6. ½ x + $50 = $262 7. = n 8. 50 - y= 82 • $200 + x = $500 • 1/2h + 17 = 35 • $2300 = 2x • = 32 • 6 - d = 12 • 4(y +10) = 48 • x - 5 = 42 16. = 12
