  3. In the beginning….. • Inca creation story • Pre-Inca civilizations • Norte Chico • Chavin • Moche • Original Inca • Inti (Sun god) • Manco Capac (c. 1200 founds Cuzco)

  4. Inca Religion • Polytheistic pantheon of gods • Drove culture and military expansion (like Aztecs) • Belief in afterlife • Mummification • Cult of dead rulers • Inca (king or prince) is the son of the sun

  6. Building an Empire • Pachacuti Inka (r. 1438-1471) • Motivations • Maintain cult of dead rulers • Need for more resources (land, water, food) • Methods: • Imperial Unification • Rewards • Intermixing with local cultures • Religious and linguistic homogeny

  7. Language • Quechua • Forced on conquered people (Patchacuti declares it official language of empire) • By 1800s, no other indigenous languages really left • 8-10 million Quechua speakers today

  8. Inca Political Structure • Hierarchy: • Inca • Four governors • Nobles (relatives) • lesser nobles, curacas (clan leaders), public officials, royal household servants, religious leaders • Commoners (agricultural and manual laborers) • Slaves

  9. Managing an Empire • Taxes (work and crops, weavings) not money) • Communication • Roads 14,000 miles worth just on Inca Trail! • NOT for commoners! • Runners (Chaskis or chasquis)

  11. Inca Social Structure • Ayllu (clan) • Land grants (no ownership) in return for crops for upper class • Cooperative cultivation • Tight knit • Mit’a (Work obligation) rotated in ayllu • Curacas (clan leaders) • System imposed on conquered people • Marriage patterns
