  2. What Are Reptiles? While reptiles may seem, at times, like amphibians there are key differences to be noted : FUN FACT!- Many reptiles, contrary to popular belief, evolved before the dinosaurs or developed alongside them!

  3. Turtles/ Testudines FUN FACT!- In 1968 tortoises were sent up in a soviet space probe to orbit the moon and test conditions for possible lunar missions! Turtle Power!

  4. Lizards FUN FACT!- As a defensive mechanism, certain species of lizards can squirt blood up to four feet out of their eyes!

  5. Snakes • Included in same order as lizards: Squamata. • Closely ralated to monitor lizards (e.g. Komodo dragon). • Few fossils have been found relating to its origin due to its fragile bones (making ancestors difficult to find). • Small vestigial appendages (spurs) are found on primitive snakes. • Use smell as a primary sense for probing environments. “Seeing with smell” FUN FACT!- The forked tongue of a snake is used to tell the direction a smell is coming from!

  6. Crocodilians FUN FACT!- Modern crocodiles can exert ~3700 pound of pressure from their bite.

  7. Tuatara • “Living fossils” closely related to lizards, but an incredibly primitive organism. • Survives only by the lack of predators • Endemic to unpopulated New Zealand islands. • There remains 2 species in their entire order • Rats are a natural predator of Tuataras FUN FACT!- There’s nothing fun about being a tuatara!
