  1. All school staff working with children must complete this course by 31 December 2013

  2. Introduction to the program and software Completion of materials in this handout Completion of 5-6 hours of simulation time in organized EDUC 330, PEG’s class, or on “one’s own time.” Submission of simulation time to ITEP couple. Completion of Goal Setting and Strategies for students currently in your class. Submission of completed handout to ITEP couples for record keeping purposes Use of “strategies” in your classroom Activities to be completed

  3. PEG’s is an interactive software program which consists of: • Teachers’ workroom • Guidance Center-Information on students and the simulation • Resource Center • Student Activity Center • After viewing information in the Teachers’ workroom, Guidance Center, and Resource Center, users enter the Student Activity Center and work with students who are having disciplinary issues. As users apply strategies, the software provides consequences for the use of that strategy. Users must be actively involved with students in the scenario. Users cannot sit and watch what happens. PEG’s-The Software

  4. Open the software and go to the “Teachers’ Workroom” • Identify the goals of this software package • Go to the “Resource Center” and identify the strategies that can be used with these students. Information about these strategies is located in this area of the program (taking notes on these strategies might be helpful). • The listing of the strategies can be found on the next page. • Go to the “Guidance Center” and become familiar with the backgrounds of the 7-10 students that are repeatedly used in the simulation (taking notes on these students might be helpful) • Go to the “Student Activity Center,” choose the lowest level of difficulty and interact with the 7-10 students in the practice area How to start PEG’s

  5. PEG’s- The Strategies

  6. Complete the activity on the next page Enter the Student Activity Center Practice Area. Choose one of the “A” strategies (Anticipate and Avoid Problems) Enter the student’s name and the initial behavior on the worksheet. Apply one of the “A” behaviors and observe the resulting behavior. Mark the resulting behavior on the worksheet Complete this process for 3 to 4 students over each of the “A” strategies and fill in the worksheet. Worksheet 1

  7. Complete the activities on the following pages Enter the Student Activity Center Practice Area. Choose one of the “B” strategies (Keep Behavior Problems from Escalation or “C” strategies (Control Highly Disruptive Behavior) Enter the student’s name and the initial behavior on the worksheet. Apply one of the “B/C” behaviors and observe the resulting behavior. Mark the resulting behavior on the worksheet Complete this process for 3 to 4 students over each of the “B/C” strategies and fill in the worksheet. Worksheet 2-3

  8. Using the information you have gained from the “Guidance Center,” “Resource Center,” and “Teachers’ Workroom,” predict the strategies that might work for the student Enter the “Student Activity Center,” choose the lowest level of difficulty and choose from one of the four areas: individual desk work, science project, group discussion, or in the hall. Apply the strategies you predicted and complete Worksheet 4 for at least three students. Worksheet 4

  9. When you enter the “Student Activity Center,” choose a level of difficulty and an area to work in. Work in that area until all students are working and on task. Exit the “Student Activity Center.” You will see an evaluation of your session. After you have read the first screen, push print. It will ask for you to “print to file” or “print to printer.” Choose “print to file.” Results will be saved in your “my documents.” Rename the saved file with a date and session number. For example: 10091201 means September 10, 2012 session number 01. The ITEP couple will view the results page. The program generally requires a response every 10 seconds. So….the number of strategies used times 10 seconds per response=time on the software. Documenting time spent on “PEG’s”

  10. You should attain the highest level of interaction (remember the choices when you entered the “Student Activity Center) and document 7-8 hours of computer time • Completion of Worksheets 1-4 in PEGS package. • Completion of Worksheets 5-7. • Worksheet 5 has you discuss your performance on the software • Worksheet 6 is a “Needs Profile” for someone currently in your class. Fill out the form in its entirety. • Worksheet 7 is a “Strategy Planner” for you to use to help a child currently in your classroom, or who will be in your classroom next term. Fill out the form in its entirety. • Turn in completed worksheet package to ITEP couple. Successful completion
