Iconic signs and codes are created to appear exactly like the thing itself.

Indexical signs are different. They act by indirectly ‘pointing’ or suggesting what they mean by acting as ‘cues’ to existing knowledge.

Symbolic codes act as signifiers of meaning totally disconnected from what they denote.
