  5. We have been working diligently with your students to prepare for success in 3rd grade and the FCAT. The following slides will help you better prepare to support your student from home.

  6. Test Taking Strategies • Re-read the question. • Go back and underline – looking for answers and/or clues. • Identify key words or phrases as you read. • Compare what you find to the answer choices. • Use Process of Elimination, and if necessary, make an educated guess. • Use time wisely. • Check, check, check your work!!

  7. What else can you do? • Work with your child nightly (make and take activities, computer/internet programs, and make sure nightly homework is completed). • Use real world situations to enhance reading and math skills. For example, ask them to read things for you in stores, restaurants, etc.. • Give positive reinforcement when the answer is correct; if they are making mistakes have them correct themselves. Ask them to explain why they are right or wrong.

  8. What else can you do? • Be your child’s cheerleader. • Remind them they are ready to take the test. • Without causing stress, convey the importance of these tests. • Make sure your child gets proper rest. • Make sure they eat a great breakfast • Nutritional, and not high in sugar. • Make sure they are in school everyday and on time.
