The Start-Up Advisory Board • American Bar Association guidelines • G-203 requires members are familiar with the objectives of the program AND knowledgeable about trends, developments, and issues in the legal profession • Membership requirements: • Practicing attorneys who employ paralegals • Practicing paralegals from public and private sectors • Paralegal managers • Faculty (can’t be majority of the board) • School administrators • General public representative

First Steps at Establishing Advisory Board… • What did I initially want from this board? • Curriculum development-trends in the field and the job market • Admissions standards • Evaluation of the adequacy of library resources • Recruitment of faculty • After launch additional outcomes of board • Market the program—generate interest in community • Assessment of program’s effectiveness

Desired outcomes required use of the experts in the legal community and later outside the legal community • Invitations sent to local Bar Associations • Local Paralegal Associations • Legal Departments in local business Once Approved… • Community College Transfer Center Coordinators • Faculty from other transfer institutions

Our connection to the Community • Creation of new courses-Capstone • Panel members for quarterly employment workshop • Internship sponsors • Open houses-recruitment tools • Creation and disbursement of annual surveys to the legal community • Fundraisers • The Advisory Board Scholarship • Kennedy Laureate Dinner

  8. More quick tips… • Create Advisory Board guidelines and bylaws • Create membership terms • Create subcommittees with leads responsible • Communicate Often • Add a student and/or alumni member • Make them feel like a part of the program

Board members and meetings Members of business community- healthcare, government, financial services, global consulting, life coaching, small business owner Currently eight members (including myself). Would like to add a program graduate and one adjunct faculty member Meet three or four times per year early evening on JFKU campus. Light refreshments served. Frequently invite selected students to attend the meeting
