  3. Project Description • The goal of this project is to design and build a miniature replica of the Curiosity, a Mars Exploration Rover.   • The replica will ultimately be part of an exhibit in a children’s museum in Indiana.  

  4. Project Overview • Replica of Mars Science Laboratory Rover • Docking station to recharge battery • Location Sensing • Use a computer/tablet to control Rover

  5. Key Concerns • Reliability: • Microcontroller • A2D converter • Fuel Gauge IC • Safety: • Unexpected behavior • Collisions • Heat generated

  6. Critical Components • Microcontroller – LPC1768 • A2D Converter – MAX1238 • Fuel Gauge IC - DS2782

  7. Components 1 – Microcontroller (LPC1768) • Erroneous instructions received • Overheating • Damage from collision • λp = 5.706 Failures/10^6 Hours • MTTF = 175254 Hours

  8. Mode, Effect and Criticality • Unexpected behavior • Cause damage to other parts during collision • Low criticality

  9. Component 2 - A2D converter (MAX1238) • Used for analog to digital conversions for the sensors • Distance measurement

  11. Components 3 – Fuel Gauge IC (DS2782) • Keep track of battery levels • When to return to the docking station

  12. Mode, Effect and Criticality • Without power the rover will not be able to operate • Without battery level information rover will not know when to dock to recharge • Low criticality
