  1. COSTUMES 101: Dressing the Part

  2. COSTUME“NEED-TO-KNOW” • Every garment worn in a production is a costume piece. • Costumes are a storytelling tool.

  3. COSTUME “NEED-TO-KNOW” • Costume design is NOT fashion design.

  4. Design clothes for CONSUMERS. • Select colors/fabrics & sketch designs that they create. • Study current fashion trends. FASHION DESIGNERS…

  5. Design clothes for PERFORMERS. • Consult with director to choose colors/fabrics. • Study historical & current fashion trends. COSTUMEDESIGNERS…

  6. WHAT DO COSTUMERS DO? And what’s the big deal about it, anyway?

  7. COSTUMERS MUST… 1. Read the script and know the characters

  8. COSTUME “NEED-TO-KNOW” • Costumes convey information about the character to the audience. • What kind of information???

  9. Clothes can immediately communicate… • Position and status • Gender • Occupation • Occasion • A bit about personality (is the person flamboyant? Modest? Independent? A conformist? Etc.)

  10. What different ways could SANTA CLAUS be portrayed as a character?

  11. COSTUMERS MUST… 2. Know the LOCATION (setting).

  12. COSTUMERS MUST… 3. Know the TIME

  13. COSTUMERS MUST… 4. Know the ACTION in each scene.

  14. RESEARCH! • After a designer reads the script, they meet with the director to discuss their plans.

  15. RESEARCH! • Then, they can begin to RESEARCH the costume design…

  16. RESEARCH! • How do you do RESEARCH for a project at school?

  17. COSTUME RESEARCH • Library • Internet • Travel • Interviews • Art • Imagination

  18. Costumes should be carefully planned… Inspiration from artand imagination

  19. RENDERING • A rendering is a detailed visual of a costume, prop, set, etc • Renderings are drawn by the designers and reflect their own personal artistic style. • Renderings can be labeled with materials.
