Cascadia EEW in PNSN • A Snapshot
Structure & Direction • UW participation in GBMF “Moore” grant • CIT, UCB, UW, (CWU) and USGS • Objective: deliver prototype EEW to sophisticated customers west-coast wide. • Overall goal: obtain long-lived general EEW services in Western US. (Involves “politics”).
UW - The Heart of Cascadia • Challenges: behind Calif., several jurisdictions, weak instrumentation. • Focus: recognition of a large Cascadia megathrust rupture in progress (or not). • First step towards more complete system • Ultimate system must be delineated soon.
Specific target • Recognize M7.5+ events with 10-20s • Evaluate odds of various scenarios of bigger earthquakes are developing • Issues • Must eliminate false alarms • One-sided coverage • Gutenburg-Richter distribution? • Identification of non-subduction events • Identification of finite-faulting very useful
