  2. Opportunities • On the Central Coast there are 17 schools – RTO sites plus 2 ETU teaching at least 1 or more Vocational Courses • Different sites /different qualified teachers = different courses • School resources • SVET

  3. Vocational Guidance @ school • 1 Careers Adviser in every school • Career and Transition Teams ( CAT Teams) • Some schools also have trained Transition Advisers

  4. Opportunities depend on many things • Location of schools and their resources • TTC • CITE’s • Junior Campus • Senior Campus • TAFE = TVET • location and transport availability

The world of VET • Vocational Education and Training • ACRONYMs • Competency based assessment means no marks and authentic assessment ( real life or work) • Optional exam or NO exam … • Dual accreditation means students receive • HSC and • AQF qualification - Certificate I, II or III or a Statement of Attainment Australian Qualification Framework • AQF = a system of national qualifications in schools, vocational education and training (TAFEs and private providers) and the higher education sector (mainly universities).

  6. Study patterns • HSC study • 2 units over 2 years = 4 units • 4 units in 1 year • 2 units in1 year = 120 hour • Pathways • Early Commencement of Stage 6 in Year 10 • Stage 5 dedicated VET 100 hour courses

  7. Board Developed Courses (with optional exam – ATAR) • Business Services • Construction Pathways • Entertainment • Hospitality • Information and Digital Media Technology • Metal and Engineering • Primary Industries • Retail Services

  8. Board Endorsed Courses (no HSC exam – non ATAR) • Furniture Making • Visual Arts • Music Industry • Sport Coaching • Many more at TAFE- hairdressing , animal studies, automotive, plumbing, • Careers Advisers are usually the best people to see to find out more information about TAFE courses, also online access.

  9. SVET and TVET • @ School • @TAFE • Advantages and Disadvantages • School / student / parent • Private Providers- not many (North Sydney Health; Whitehouse School of Fashion) LSLD = many more approaches to schools??? …………………Buyer beware!

  10. SVET and the RTO • Registered Training Organisation (within DEC) • Public Schools NSW Macquarie Park 90222 • RTO will be audited in 2014 by governing body – • Australian Skills Quality Authority(ASQA) • The realignment has brought changes from • 10 RTOs to 4 RTO’s

  11. ASQA vs DEC BOS • 2 Masters ….and BOS • Compliance to all • Assignments/ competency assessment events • Feedback to teachers • RPL= Recognition of Prior Learning- forms • BOS = mandatory work placement = HSC

  12. What does this mean for your students in school? • Hopefully, they will not notice any changes • Smooth transition • Teachers upgraded in their qualifications • Central Coast has BEC courses…other areas do not allow these in schools!

Work Placement • Compulsory for ALL Board Developed Courses • Not included in Board Endorsed Courses…but still a valuable experience • Lack of work placements • Employers are limited and are facing burnout • More students but less employers • Work Place Service Provider (WPSP) is YouthConnections.com for ALL students in ALL schools and TAFEs on CC • Paperwork; paperwork; paperwork= Insurance

  14. Parents beware! • Work placement is mandatory for HSC • VET Qualification can still be attained without work placement BUT BOS HSC cannot! • Students often say that Parents can get them to work placement • Students don’t want to travel to work?? • Think carefully about choosing a VET course.

  15. SBAT ??? • Part time School Based Apprenticeship - SBA • Part time School Based Traineeship - SBT • Mix of school/study work and a VET course to study @ school or TAFE or in the workplace? • Students need an employer! • http://www.sbatinnsw.info/for more information

  16. What else??? • SKILLS • Dual Qualification • HSC and Certificate • Some employers may not want students with qualifications…. in some industries • Changes to some courses…..Metal • Smart and Skilled – pick up some information
