  3. SD #49 CENTRAL COAST • WELCOME TO SD #49 FRAMEWORK for • ENHANCING • STUDENT LEARNING • This FRAMEWORK is a story. • It begins and ends with students. • School District #49’s designed • FRAMEWORK • will capture the • educational journey for students in our District. 3

  4. SD #49 CENTRAL COAST MISSION STATEMENT for SCHOOL DISTRICT #49 We know and care abouteach and everySTUDENTand valueexperiential learningto activate high academics. 4

  5. SD #49 CENTRAL COAST • WELCOME TO SD #49 • 2016-19 • FRAMEWORK • for ENHANCING • STUDENT LEARNING • To begin the first part of our story regarding the development of District #49’s FRAMEWORK • we first need to understand the newly created • BC Curriculum Model • and why we used this model to build our District FRAMEWORK. 5

  6. SD #49 CENTRAL COAST • THE B.C. • CURRICULUM MODEL • This model designed by the • B.C. Ministry of Education • is used to capture all areas of learning which are based on a • “Understand – Do – Know” • model to support a concept-based • competency-driven approach to learning. 6

  7. SD #49 CENTRAL COAST • Three elements, the • Big Ideas (Understand) • Curricular Competencies (Do) • Content (Know) • all work together to support deeper learning. • British Columbia’s curriculum design enables a personalized, flexible and innovative approach at all levels of the education system. • All areas of learning have been redesigned using this model. • CURRICULUM MODEL 7

  8. SD #49 CENTRAL COAST • UNDERSTANDING – BIG IDEAS • Generalizations & Principles • (what student will understand) • DO – CURRICULAR COMPENTENCY LEARNING STANDARDS • Skills & Strategies • (what student will be able to do) • KNOW – CONTENT LEARNING STANDARDS • Knowledge & Facts • (what student will know) 8

  9. SD #49 CENTRAL COAST • Big Ideas (Understand) • The Big Ideas consist of generalizations and principles and the key concepts important • in an area of learning. • They reflect the “Understand” component of the Understand-Do-Know model of learning. • The big ideas represent what students will understand at the completion of the curriculum for their grade. • They are intended to endure beyond a single grade and contribute to future understanding. • Curricular Competencies (Do) • The Curricular Competencies are the skills, strategies, and processes that students develop over time. • They reflect the “Do” in the Understand-Do-Know model of learning. While Curricular Competencies are more subject-specific, they are connected to the Core Competencies of Creative Thinking, Communication and Positive Personal & Cultural Identity. • Content (Know) • The Content learning standards — the “Know” of the Understand-Do-Know model of learning — detail the essential topics and knowledge at each grade level. 9

  10. SD #49 CENTRAL COAST • SD #49 FRAMEWORK • THE B.C. • Curriculum Model • will be used as a template to construct our District • 2016-19 • FRAMEWORK for • ENHANCING STUDENT LEARNING 10

  11. SD #49 CENTRAL COAST • Using the BC Curriculum Model we explored the following questions to guide the construction of • SD #49’s FRAMEWORK: • What do we understand? • What do we do? • How will we know? 11

  12. SD #49 CENTRAL COAST • What do we understand? • What are the “Big Ideas” that School District #49 stands for? The first step in the process of planning for student success is defining our mission, values, and goals. Our Mission Statement holds us accountable to the public, and is a clear declaration of what we are about and why we exist. Our Mission Statement is an expression of our collectivepreferred future. Defined values are what guide the day-to-day decisions that affect student learning in our district. Our District goals should be informed by a specific clear Mission Statement with well-defined values. 12

  13. SD #49 CENTRAL COAST What do we do? Once goals are identified through meaningful dialogue with students and the school, family and community connected to them - a strategic, evidence-based plan to enhance student learning can be developed. This plan must maintain a student-first focus. Through the establishment of clear, positive expectations, we will create an inviting and inclusive environment in which we can celebrate together the successes of students, staff, and communities. 13

  14. SD #49 CENTRAL COAST 3) How will we know? The effectiveness of any plan must be measured on a continual basis, then adjusted as necessary. The use of existing tools, such as Individual Student Support Plans (ISSP), and the collaborative development and refinement of new assessment tools will allow communities of learners to continually monitor and adapt learning environments to the specific needs of individuals and groups. How will we measure what students will know? 14

  15. SD #49 CENTRAL COAST • SD #49 FRAMEWORK • From these guiding questions used from the BC Curriculum Model • – our School District constructed the following • 2016-19 FRAMEWORK for ENHANCING • STUDENT LEARNING. 15

  16. SD #49 CENTRAL COAST SD #49 GOALS What Students, Parents, Staff & Community will UNDERSTAND regarding the School & District Goals that shape our Framework for Enhancing Student Learning over 1 – 3 years. 29. BELLA COOLA ELEMENTARY 29 JOURNAL OF PROGRESS • February 24/2017 – Spuxta contacted the radio station and acquired all of Dale’s language lessons on a hard drive. The school had it’s first language lesson at a staff meeting this week. The staff were very receptive.   • June 16/2017 – Number posters were created and handed out to all the classroom teachers. We have only had two language lessons at staff meetings. Scheduling has been a bit of an issue, but we will try for more regular lessons in the fall. Some teachers have created posters based on the lesson for their rooms.  • Dec 13/2017 - The preschool has ordered dolls that represent a diversity of cultures. Release time will be provided in the new year to allow the Preschool teacher time to develop local curriculum. We have had meetings on how to build the cultural component in the After School Program in the winter. Staff language meetings have not been happening as regularly as they could be. We will be setting up regular lessons on every second meeting in the month.

  30. BELLA COOLA ELEMENTARY 30 JOURNAL OF PROGRESS • June 2018 – This continues to be an area of growth for us. Staff turn over has impacted this initiative. However, looking into next year some changes have been made to better support progress. There has been a shift of workload for our HSC to allow them to have more time to reach out to Elders and Cultural Leaders. • February 2019 – This continues to be an area of growth for us.  We have had a number of new staff members and a new Nuxalk teacher this year.  Our Nuxalk teacher participated in an intensive language immersion workshop this summer.  She has also been participating in Pro-D activities with Jerrell at Acwsalcta.  Throughout the school (including Preschool and Daycare), Nuxalk can be seen in classroom posters (numbers and colours), greeting signs in the front foyer and on the door.  In classrooms, teachers are using Nuxalk animal names for literacy group names.  We have attempted to incorporate Nuxalk words in our monthly newsletter and we also incorporated it in our Christmas Concert welcome and close.  We are still working on collecting a working binder of names of Elders and Cultural Leaders who could further support After School Program at BCE.

  33. BELLA COOLA ELEMENTARY 33 JOURNAL OF PROGRESS • December 06/16 • At the end of last school year, the school acquired a cell phone that is for texts and messaging. We also set up a Facebook identity that allows Facebook messaging to be used for connecting with parents. Anecdotally, we are having more parents connecting with the school when their children are away. • This fall, we have been tracking each student with chronic absenteeism using a color coded calendars. These calendars are being shared with families at parent teacher interviews, and at home visits. They have been used to show parents how frequent their children are away, as well as share when there is a positive change in attendance. • February 24/17 • We have been tracking out daily absenteeism from last March. We haven’t been able to get good data for before that date. We will be able to see if we have increased attendance in the last term of this year. We have determined that on a ‘good day’ we have less then 10% absenteeism. Approx. 10 students.

  34. BELLA COOLA ELEMENTARY 34 JOURNAL OF PROGRESS • June 16/ 2017 • We are continuing to track daily percentages of absenteeism. We still cannot compare them to last years data for the year, so the next year will provide us with more comparable data.  We have created a color coded calendars to look at the trends of absenteeism and we found that some of our best months are ones with strong themes. We are going to target three months next year and monitor for an effect on attendance. The winter was particularly harsh for  illness. We have stocked the school with hand sanitizer to help prevent speeding germs.  • December 13/2017 • We were able to compare attendance to last year. September absenteeism was up slightly from last year. However, October was down 40% to 8.28%, and November was down 20% to 11.2% for the month.

  35. BELLA COOLA ELEMENTARY 35 JOURNAL OF PROGRESS • June 30/2018 • When last years attendance is compared to this years attendance, there has been no significant change over the year, however month data has varied. Enrollment has increased 10%

  36. BELLA COOLA ELEMENTARY 36 JOURNAL OF PROGRESS • February 2019 – Attendance percentages are calculated daily by the secretary.  We are continuing to utilize our school cell phone as an alternative to traditional land line telephone contacts.  As such, we are able to regularly send/receive texts to/from parents.  As well, we have a Bella Coola Elementary Facebook page.  This allows us to communicate with parents via Facebook Messenger.  We have posted all the various ways (school landline number, cell phone number, Facebook, etc) to contact us on our bulletin board in the front hall at BCE.  The prinicpal and the HSC have been following up with individuals (and their families) who have a large number of absences.  The HSC (and sometimes our CYCW) have provided transportation (short term) for individuals who have needed it in order to attend on a more regular basis.

  37. BELLA COOLA ELEMENTARY 37 TIMELINE • LEGEND: • RED = Beginning • YELLOW = Almost Half Way • GREEN = Mid Way Through • BLUE = Near Completion (Strategy Encultured) Do 3) BUILD A COMMUNITY MINDSET, WHERE OVER TIME EACH CHILD CONNECTS TO THE SCHOOL COMMUNITY, THROUGH EXPLORATORY PHYSICAL, ARTISTIC AND SOCIAL GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES

  38. BELLA COOLA ELEMENTARY 38 LEGEND: RED = Not Started or Just Introduced YELLOW = Minimal Achievement GREEN = Mostly Achieved BLUE = Mastered LEVEL OF ACHIEVEMENT GOAL 1 Know 3) STUDENTS WILL BE SURVEYED ONCE A YEAR, AND 75% WILL INDICATE A SENSE OF CONNECTEDNESS TO THE SCHOOL THROUGH CLUBS, RECOGNITION OR ACTIVITIES

  39. BELLA COOLA ELEMENTARY 39 JOURNAL OF PROGRESS • December 05/2016 • Even though this goal is not scheduled to start until next year, staff have begun the journey. BCE participated in the Terry Fox Run at the end of September. In preparation for this, a running club was started. BCE had a soccer team participate in the MudBowl tournament in October. In December, two teachers and an EA started intermural. One student approached me to start basketball shoot around on Tuesdays and another one approached me wanting to start a crafting club. The Library EA has also built a small makerspace in the library. • February 24/2017 • Students have continued to participate in intermural. There is an effort to get students participation in assemblies – such as the Chinese New Year celebration and our Kindness Assembly. We also have a board at the front of the school where collective school wide displays are posted. There have been discussions among the staff that next year we should plan our school wide themes together at staff meetings so more planning can go into student involvement. I will be developing a survey for students to take in the spring.

  40. BELLA COOLA ELEMENTARY 40 JOURNAL OF PROGRESS • June 16/ 2017 • A survey was complete and distributed to the older students. The data should be ready for interpretation at the end of the school year. School wide themes and theme days have been decided on for next year. There are many celebration and field trips planned for the end of year, thus solidifying the sense of community that is developing in the school.   • December 13/2017 • The survey indicated that students are generally indicated that students are generally happy at school and have a sense of belonging. There were a few outliers, and the survey helped us identify them and connect them with support staff or counselling services. The grade 4 students have completed the MDI ( middle years development Index) and when the results get back to us, we will review it as a staff.  • We are continuing with building a community at the school through our annual activities – MudBowl, Terry Fox Run, Christmas Events, Remembrance Day Ceremony, Halloween Parade, Christmas community visits from students and  intramurals. I have also noticed that posting group work in the hallways has developed a sense of community and that the library being a common area has become a 'hub' for many students.

  41. BELLA COOLA ELEMENTARY 41 JOURNAL OF PROGRESS • June 30/2018 • We were unable to do an school survey at the end of the year this year. However, the grade 4 students participated in the MDI and 64% of students reported that they feel like they belong in the school and 71% reported that there were 2 or more important adults at the school. The report gives detailed information regarding Social  & Emotional Development, Physical Health and Well being, Connectedness,  Use of Afterschool Time, and School Experience. At the end there is an over all number for students at BCE. The over all numbers indicate that 30% of our students are thriving, 20% are medium and 50% are low. It has been suggested that MDI is not good for year to year comparative data, but better for trends over time and identifying areas of need.  • February 2019 – We have not yet done a student school survey; however, we have participated in a number of events and activities that have included all of our learners:  Terry Fox Run, Remembrance Assembly, Halloween Parade, Mudbowl, Santa visit with book give away, Intramurals, Mancala in the library, After School Program, Skating and in March we are having a whole school spaghetti luncheon.

  49. BELLA COOLA ELEMENTARY 49 JOURNAL OF PROGRESS • December 06/2016 • We ordered posters with appreciative language for all the classrooms. Teachers are using this language when assessing students, and are promoting students to self assess using the same language. The school district that created these posters has a fourth term as a step four called ‘taking it beyond’. We will discuss this at a school level to see if would like to adopt the term. • February 24/2017 • There are posted in every classroom. I am hearing students in the younger grades using the language to describe their achievement. There was a newsletter home explaining the terms to parents and the same language is used on our progress reports that are going home before March Break. • June 16/2017 • Language is sent home regularly to parents and students using these terms. All reports home as well as FreshGrade posts are using this language https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YqoQQCAsRs

  50. BELLA COOLA ELEMENTARY 50 JOURNAL OF PROGRESS • December 13/2017 • This language has become common in the classrooms. There is a document regularly sent home explaining these terms as well as the types of reporting parents can expect. The language is now on all reporting home, including language reports.  • June 30/2018 • This goal is achieved and needs continual support by making supportive materials to teachers available. • February 2019 – Common language is being used in classes.  Teachers have a variety of different posters up for students to refer to regarding assessment practices being used in the class. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YqoQQCAsRs
