According to the Union Carbide Corporation guidelines it is mandatory for the plant to protect MIC tank with proper safety measures What went wrong at Bhopal plant was that total disruption of essential safety provisions & negligence of the authority
It was chilly windy December night, the city of Bhopal was asleep In the Union Carbaide Plant at about 11:30 pm workers of night shift realized that there was MIC leak somewhere as their eyes were aching intensely
People woke up coughing violently and eyes burning They fled from home by whatever transport they could get The gas emitted from the high stack spread over some 40 sqkm. and affected about 2 lac people
Within a week about 10000 people died 1000 people became blind More than 1 lack people suffer from various disorder
Operation Faith The task of disposing of the stored MIC was given to CSIR It was decided to convert MIC into final product by starting the factory operation People were panicked they left Bhopal, their confidence was shaken The `Operation faith’ was initiated by MP govt.
The Aftermath It can be concluded that UCC did not care for the safety in a country like India where inadequate govt. regulation and uninformed people neglected the safety measures UCC had faced law suits from both India and USA. But victims are yet to get compensation
