  1. John 1Transforming Light

  2. John 1:1-5 (p.809) • John is different than the other 3 Gospels. • LOGOS (= “Word”) • Jesus is the Logos, the Word of God. • It is important that we know who Jesus is.

  3. John 1:6-9 • Author – John, son of Zebedee • Community – see John 21:24 • Language – basic Greek, deep theology

  4. Light and Darkness • “Light” – a key word for John • The “world” is in darkness (world = all that is against God). • John 1:4-5, 9 – Jesus is the light and life of the world.

  5. Light and Darkness God’s light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil. All who do evil hate the light and refuse to go near it for fear their sins will be exposed. But those who do what is right come to the light so others can see that they are doing what God wants. John 3:19b-21

  6. Light and Darkness My light will shine for you just a little longer. Walk in the light while you can, so the darkness will not overtake you. Those who walk in the darkness cannot see where they are going. Put your trust in the light while there is still time; then you will become children of the light. … I have come as a light to shine in this dark world, so that all who put their trust in me will no longer remain in the dark. John 12:35-36, 46

  7. Light and Darkness This is the message we heard from Jesus and now declare to you: God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. So we are lying if we say we have fellowship with God but go on living in spiritual darkness; we are not practicing the truth. But if we are living in the light, as God is in the light, then we have fellowship with each other, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, cleanses us from all sin. 1 John 1:5-7

  8. Light and Darkness If anyone claims, “I am living in the light,” but hates a Christian brother or sister, that person is still living in darkness. Anyone who loves another brother or sister is living in the light and does not cause others to stumble. But anyone who hates another brother or sister is still living and walking in darkness. Such a person does not know the way to go, having been blinded by the darkness. 1 John 2:9-11

  9. Light and Darkness I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won't have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life. John 8:12 (cf 9:5)

  10. John 1:10-18 – Believe and Receive • Right to become (transformed) children of God. • Reborn from God. • Grace (upon grace) • Truth • Glory • God revealed – new relationship – BE LOVED • Jesus came to give the whole world this grace. • Life can be changed! Trust and Accept Jesus.
