  11. Listen and Read 2 • In Canada only 20% of jobs are advertised in a newspaper or posted on websites. The rest, the remaining 80%, are in the so called hidden job market and people looking for work can only find out about them through the grapevine. But how can you get in the loop for this hidden job market?

  12. Listen and Read 3 • Networking is the key to finding jobs! Tell people you know that you are available and what terrific skills you have! For sure one of them knows someone that might need you!

  13. Listen and Read 4 • Another strategy is cold calling. A cold call’s when you call an employer who you do not know. The company has no job advertised, but the caller thinks that it’d be a nice place to work. The caller hopes that the call will lead to a face-to-face meeting with the employer. And it often works!

  14. Listen and Read 3 • Another very valuable strategy is to make an Information Interview. This isn’t a job interview where you‘re interviewed by an employer. You turn the tables: you ask for the interview! You pick someone that has a job you are interested in. You meet with that person and ask all about the work. Because there is no pressure and stress you can develop a good relationship. You leave your résumé with the person and you’ll be surprised how many people call back!
