  1. Model B – Capacity Building Partnerships • Intended for cohort of students: suggestion no less than 5 each year • Partners: usually overseas academic research or commercial and industrial institutions with a research component and reputation • Supervisors appointed at both institutions. All supervisors to be familiar with the UK system for the award of higher degrees, including standards and learning outcomes • Leeds supervisor to visit partner institution at least once during the programme

Model B – Capacity Building Partnerships Several routes • Integrated degree of PhD and Master: research training and taught elements (the Master components completed by the end of Year 2) • ESRC style “1+3” programmes with all taught elements in Year 1 for full-time students, before proceeding to research in Year 2 (Masters programme completed by the end of Year 1)

  3. Model B – Modes & Standard Periods of Study Modes of Study Either • Combination of full and part-time study Or • Full-time study in specific circumstances Standard Periods of Study • Full-time study, 4 years (max time limit, 5 years) • Part-time study, 5 years (max time limit, 6 years)

Model B – Characteristics of the combination of full & part-time modes of study • At least 2.5 years to be spent full-time at Leeds • First 21-24 months in Leeds for Integrated Degree route • First 9-12 Months in Leeds for “1+3” route • Both routes include at least 180 taught credits at Leeds • Agreed training plan approved within one month of start • Research & generic skills training during full-time period of study in Leeds and the throughout the programme • Early exit qualifications are possible

Model B – Characteristics of the combination of full & part-time modes of study • Usual University requirements for research degree programmes • Records kept of supervision meetings • Minimum of 10 supervision meetings per year for full-time students; 5 for part-time students • Annual report to the University Steering Committee for Split-Site students

Model B – Academic fees • A University fee level will be set, which will be “front loaded” in Year 1 as follows: • As for Model A, Deans in consultation with Faculty Finance Officers may negotiate a different fee level in particular cases • Form 21 to be completed for Accounts Receivable authorising Faculty payment of any residual fees that will not be met by the student/sponsor

Model B – Method of Establishing a Split Site PhD (Capacity Building Partnership) As for Model A • Faculty/School submits proposal to Pro-Dean for Research • Pro-Dean for Research investigates from a strategic, academic and financial perspective (in consultation with Faculty Finance Manager) and consults with Dean • The Pro-Dean for Research will complete a standard Site Report and Due Diligence Form for review by the University’s Legal Advisor and the Steering Committee for Split Site PhD programmes. This Committee will consult with PSAG as appropriate. • If approved a standard Memorandum of Understanding and Collaboration will be prepared by the Legal Advisor for signature by Leeds and the partner institution

  8. Model B – Entry Qualifications • Degree equivalent to UK second class honours in a relevant • For international students: at least IELTS band score 6.0 (with 5.5 in listening and reading, and 5.0 in speaking and writing) or paper-based TOEFL 550 (with 4 in TWE) or computer based TOEFL 220 (with an essay rating of 4.0) • Some schools may require higher levels of English language
