  1. Herbert Morrison Primary School Although we live in a metropolitan area, the school has a beautiful garden for the staff and pupils to enjoy. A small playing field and playgrounds meet the garden at the back of the school The children start school at 9:00am and finish at 3:30pm. They have a morning and lunchtime break. Our school is named after the statesman, Lord Morrison of Lambeth. Its situated just south of the River Thames in the borough of Lambeth. It is a small school with 1 class per year group, ranging from the Nursery for 3 year olds up to Year 6 who are 11 years old when they leave.

  2. Nursery children get in role! Crocodile class go fishing! Year 2 Reindeer concentrate hard on their art work. Wonderful dancing from Year 1 Pandas.

School Statistics • Herbert Morrison Primary school is for girls and boys from the age of 3-11. • There are eight classes starting from the Nursery to Year 6. • We have about 200 pupils altogether • There are 10 teachers and two Nursery Nurses. • We are lucky to have one full time Teaching Assistant (TA), per class.

Description of the School • Herbert Morrison Primary School is smaller than average, with a high proportion of pupils who are eligible for free school meals. • The school caters for pupils from a rich diversity of ethnic backgrounds. • The majority of pupils are of Black African or Caribbean origin. • More pupils than average do not speak English at home. • We have the Basic Skills Quality Mark, Silver Artsmark Award, Healthy Schools and Leading Aspect Award for African Achievement.;

  6. Governors • Our governors have the responsibility for overseeing the organisation of the school as well as the curriculum and the budget. • They are representatives of the parents, school staff and the local community. They meet once a term and more frequently.

  7. School Council • The school council provides a forum for us to listen to children’s suggestions and enables children to take part in fundraising and some decision concerning the running of the school. Each class has two representatives who meet once a week with a senior teacher.

  8. School Times • School starts at 9:00am • We have lunch at 12:00pm • Our afternoon session starts at 1:15pm and school finishes at 3:30pm • Most children enjoy a hot school lunch provided by catering staff.

The Curriculum • We study Literacy, Mathematics, Science, Information, Communication Technology (ICT), as our core subjects. • Our Foundation subjects are; P.E, Design and Technology (DT), Art, Music, Geography, History, Drama, Religious Education (R.E), Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education (PSHCE).

  10. Special Educational Needs • At Herbert Morrison we have screening procedures for identifying and assessing children’s special educational needs. Often these learning difficulties are relatively minor and can be overcome with extra help from the class teacher. Sometimes additional support is provided or arranged by our Special Needs Co-coordinator and, where necessary, specialist outside experts are called in.

  11. More Able Pupils • We are equally alert to the identification of children who are exceptionally able and aim to meet their needs in a challenging and stimulating way.

  12. School Uniform • All children wear a school uniform. We believe this shared identity helps children work together for a common goal. It also avoids morning rows over what to wear!

  13. Behaviour • At Herbert Morrison School, we want all children to be given the chance to make the right decision about their behaviour. We have set up strategies to help them to make these decisions. • The whole school, consistently uses the ‘Assertive Discipline’ method which involves writing the child’s name under a ‘happy’ or ‘sad’ face on the board resulting from following the rules.

  14. Maths activities for Year 3 elephants. Year 4 Tigers show their teeth! Boys from year 6 Rabbits, pose in the playground! Year 5 Giraffes relax in the garden.

  15. We like to display our art work in the main hall. The whole school gets together there daily for collective worship. We sing, listen to stories and share our learning. Our parents come and see our performances and at the end of the Autumn and Summer term we have bigger shows and invite local figures.

  16. On cultural day, Reindeer class learned to play African drums. We have a series of themed events during the year. In February we celebrate black history month to learn about black culture and heritage. We certainly enjoy dressing up at Herbert Morrison. Here the staff and children have come to school dressed as book characters to celebrate their favourite stories and raise the profile of reading. FatherChristmas visits the school in December.

  17. We have lots of fun at the summer barbeque. Children, parents and friends of the school come and help raise funds. The traditional sack race on sports day!

  18. The children usually wear a school uniform. Today the children can wear their own clothes, and the staff get into school attire! Here is our staff room on a normal day!
