  1. IETF Network Management Framework and Standardsdraft-ersue-opsawg-management-fw-01 IETF #79, Beijing O&M Area Working Group WG mehmet.ersue@nsn.com

  2. Guideline for NM Standard usage • Newcomers and other SDOs are asking for guidance on the usage of IETF network management standards • e.g. folks from NIST SGIP and IEC have recently asked for it • To help standard developers and implementers we need to: • explain the overall IETF Network Management Framework, • give a profile of recommended technologies and building blocks • management standards which fit and work well together • explain the usage scenario for specific management protocols • but also highlight RFCs which are not recommended to use (e.g. COPS-PR) SGIP: Smart Grid Interoperability Panel IEC: International Electrotechnical Commission

  3. IETF Network Management Framework • draft-ersue-opsawg-management-fw-01 uses the expired I-D draft-ietf-opsawg-survey-management-00 (contributed by David Harrington) as a starting point • gives an overview of the IETF standard management framework, • summarizes existing and ongoing development of standards-track network management protocols and data models. • The document can be also used as a guideline by other SDOs or bodies planning to use IETF management technologies and data models. • The document mainly refers to Proposed, Draft or Full Standard documents at IETF. • As far as it is valuable standard track I-Ds just before publication and Best Current Practice (BCP) documents are referenced.

  4. Next Steps and Action Points • Keep the document focused as a guideline • put parts specific to Smart Grid in an applicability statement • discuss main usage scenarios • discuss new technologies like EMAN in an appendix • Extend the draft for specific topics with the help of contributors: • SNMP and MIBs, SYSLOG, etc. (David Harrington) • IPFIX, PSAMP (Juergen Quittek) • YANG usage (Juergen Schönwälder) • Radius und Diameter (Jouni Korhonen) • IPv6 operations (Fred Baker) • Eman usage scenarios und discussion (Benoit Claise)

  5. The Plan to go forward • Start discussion on OPSAWG ML • Get it stable • Prepare to publish beginning of 2011 as Informational RFC • Make available in NIST SGIP and IEC • It seems there is already support for this work to publish • Backing of O&M area WG would be helpful
