  2. Define respiration • Respiration is a series of chemical reactions that occur to break down chemical energy such as glucose, fat and proteins. • Respiration is occurring all the time in all cells – this is why all cells need a blood supply so they can get oxygen.

  3. Define aerobic respiration • Aerobic respiration occurs in the mitochondria of cells. It requires oxygen and produces a lot more energy for the cell than anaerobic respiration.

  4. State the word equation for aerobic respiration glucose + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy State the word equation for aerobic respiration using symbols • C6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + energy

  5. State the uses of energy in the body of humans • muscle contraction • cell division • absorption of nutrients • impulses along verves • protein synthesis (making enzymes, hormones and antibodies) • making new cell organelles • maintaining body temperature
