  1. THE PREVALENCE OF DYSLIPIDEMIA, DIABETES, HYPERTENSION, STROKE AND ANGINA PECTORIS IN THE PHILIPPINES SPONSORS: Food and Nutrition Research Institute Department of Health Philippine Society of Hypertension Philippine Diabetes Association Philippine Lipid Society 1998

  2. OBJECTIVES: 1. To assess the lipid profile (total cholesterol, HDL-C, LDL-C, triglyceride), fasting blood sugar on a sub-sample of Filipinos; 2. To determine the prevalence of hypertension, angina, and stroke on a sub-sample of Filipinos; 3. To determine the prevalence of smoking of Filipinos.

  3. METHODOLOGY Study Population and Sampling Scheme This study covered all the provinces of the Philippines and employed a two-stage stratified sampling design. The final sample size comprised 4,541 individuals aged 20 years or more.

  4. Results TOTAL CHOLESTEROL LEVEL (mg/dl) of FILIPINOS (N=4,541) % ±SE  200 % ±SE 200-239 % ±SE  239 MEAN ±SE 159 ± 1.2 84 ± 0.01 12 ± 0.01 4 ± 0.005

  5. Results LDL-CHOLESTEROL LEVEL (mg/dl) of FILIPINOS (N=4,541) % ±SE  130 % ±SE 130-159 % ±SE 160-189 % ±SE  190 MEAN ±SE 76 ± 0.01 107 ± 1.1 16 ± 0.01 6 ± 0.01 2 ± 0.003

  6. Results HDL-CHOLESTEROL LEVEL (mg/dl) of FILIPINOS (N=4,541) % ±SE  35 % ±SE 35-59 % ±SE  60 MEAN ±SE 30 ± 0.4 65 ± 0.01 32 ± 0.01 3 ± 0.004

  7. Results TRIGLYCERIDE LEVEL (mg/dl) of FILIPINOS (N=4,541) % ±SE  150 % ±SE 150-199 % ±SE 200-399 % ±SE  400 MEAN ±SE 116 ± 1.9 81 ± 0.01 10 ± 0.01 8 ± 0.01 1 ± 0.002

  8. Results GLUCOSE LEVEL (mg/dl) of FILIPINOS (N=4,541) % ±SE  110 % ±SE 110-125 % ±SE  125 MEAN ±SE 88 ± 0.8 94 ± 0.01 2 ± 0.004 4 ± 0.01

  9. Results MEAN SYSTOLIC AND DIASTOLIC BLOOD PRESSURE (mm Hg) of FILIPINOS (N=4,541) Mean, SE Mean, SE (Systolic) (Diastolic) Total Mean 119; 0.49 78; 0.34

  10. Results BP CLASSIFICATION (based on JNC-VI) _________________________________________________ BP Classification % (SE) _____________________________________________________ Normal (<130/<85) 66 (1.3) High Normal (130-139/85-89) 12 (1.0) Mild (140-159/90-99) 14 (0.9) Moderate (160-179/100-109) 4 (0.5) Severe (180-209/110-119) 2 (0.3) Very Severe (>=210/>=120) 1 (0.1) Elevated BP 21

  11. Results PREVALENCE OF HYPERTENSION, ANGINA, and STROKE of FILIPINOS using the QUESTIONNAIRES and MARCHEVSKY EQUATION (N=4,541) Adjusted Prevalence Using Marchevsky Estimated Prevalence (Questionnaires) SE Hypertension 27.16% 0.0115 17.2% Angina 17.88% 0.0105 12.9% _ Stroke 6.59% 0.0061

  12. Results Marchevsky Equation (Hypertension) P = Prevalence (HPN questionnaire) - (1 - specificity) Sensitivity - (1 - specificity) P = 0.272 - ( 1 - 0.879) 1.0 - (1 - 0.879) = 0.172 or 17.2%

  13. Results PREVALENCE OF SMOKING AMONG FILIPINOS (20 yrs. or above, N=4,541) Non Smoker (%) Ex-Smoker (%) Current Cigar Smoker (%) Current Cigarette Smoker (sticks/day) 1-14 (%) 15-24(%) > 25(%) 54.5 12.8 21.8 8.6 1.2 1.1

  14. Conclusions 1. The biochemical data discloses extremely surprising low levels of total cholesterol (159 mg/dl), LDL cholesterol (107 mg/dl), HDL cholesterol(30mg/dl) and triglycerides (116 mg/dl). This observation implies that the prevalence of dyslipidemia among Filipinos may be much lower than expected. 2. The prevalence of fasting hyperglycemia in this study is 4%. 3. The prevalence of smoking in the Philippines continues to be alarmingly high. The latest survey shows that 45.5% of Filipinos have a history of smoking with 32% being current smokers. 4. The prevalence of hypertension (17%), angina (13%), and stroke (6.6%) are lower compared to data from other studies.
