Worked for family construction business Moved into surveying and took HND/BSc Hons at Bristol Worked as planned maintenance manager for national housing association in London CIOB Accreditation/HE Liaison Manager MA e-business – Middlesex University Business Link SME project manager. Managing regional and national initiatives. My Background and Experience-----------------------------------------

What is the CKE project? • ---------------------------- • Funded by HEIF 2 (Higher Education Innovation Fund for 2 years (to October 2006) – HEIF 3 possible. • LSBU, UWE in Bristol, Leeds Met, Salford, UCLAN in Preston and Wolverhampton all have regional CKEs. • LSBU staff are Barry Symonds (Project Director) and John Hampson (Co-ordinator). Research Fellow soon. • Partners are CITB Construction-Skills, CE, CEBE, and CIC

What is the CKE project? – (2) -------------------------------------------- Sir John Fairclough "What is needed for industry, working with the leading universities to make a major response to this state of affairs and to offer courses that help prepare the leaders of tomorrow." Sir John Egan "The future for UK construction relies upon modern professionals working in integrated teams in a multi-disciplinary way". CITB Skills Foresight Report 2002 "One of the main barriers to growth and development is the lack of appropriately educated professionals in the right quantity and of the right quality to support the way our industry is developing".

What will the CKE do? • ------------------------------- • The government aim is to improve innovation within HE, and as part of it’s general strategy with industry • Bring together academics, companies, PIs, Government, SSC’s, FE colleges, and universities within each region • Promote knowledge exchange and joint professional sector working in the spirit of Latham and Egan. • Seek to cross boundaries and build relationships within diverse audiences.

Aims and objectives of CKE • ----------------------------------------- • Staff and students working in projects • Business awareness for HE staff • Income from enterprise consultancy and training • SMEs assisted in their innovation • Academic secondments into industry • Industrial secondments into HE • Industry/academic forums to develop courses • Enterprise consultancy for SMEs • Case studies if industry/HE engagement

Source industry relevant ideas for student projects Research - Update on understanding of industry research and development needs and Collaborating with industry and other HEI’s on research projects Enterprise - Giving you new consultancy opportunities/deliver short courses Career Progression- Opportunities for personnel development, improve your academic/industry profile Improving Student Prospects -Industry input into curriculum development and increased student placements and sandwich opportunities/employability

Training and Career Progression - Customised industrial short courses and training, access to quality CPD events and re-training opportunities. Access to cutting edge knowledge and innovation - Construction IT such as software, mobile technology, 3D visualisation and CAD. New emerging manufacturing technologies such as virtual prototyping and materials testing. Linking to funding and resource opportunities - Advice on receiving DTI funding to complete a strategic project (KTP’s). Networking you to other funded assistance such as Learning Skills Council Innovation Circle - Bringing together professionals to identify industry problems and develop real solutions – facilitated by the CKE FREE of charge.

Examples of what the CKE is doing at LSBU • ------------------------------------------------ • Training/CPD - CIOB DMX and RICS CPD programme • Business awareness – 3 Events so far • SMEs – “Innovation Circles”; Asset Skills, Southwark Chamber • Academic Secondments – KTPs and company visits • Industrial Secondments – Visits and projects • Forums – new LSBU FD(sc) and MSc non cognate courses • Consultancy – scoping out new project with LSBU academics • Case studies – sharing KTP data with other HEIs • Events – Regeneration, Trust Mark • Sponsorship – Working with major employers
