  1. Recording Flight SheetsMike Petro Ohio Association Official's Clinic January 19, 2014

  2. Agenda • Review and discuss key points for recording flight sheets for vertical jump, horizontal jump, or throwing events… • Before the Event • During the Event • After the Event • Example Sheets • Resources • The reality is that a single official often wears many hats… including flight coordinator and recorder. This presentation assumes you have these duties.

  3. Before the Event • Check in athletes and advise on warm-up procedures and timing • Get starting heights for vertical jumps, standards for pole vault, and take-off board choice for triple jump • On the recording sheets for vertical jump events, enter height progressions – metric & imperial • HJ: generally 2 - 5 cm • PV: generally 5 - 15 cm • Mark passes to show starting height for verticals • Record the time of day the event starts

  4. Discussion Point • Do you fill out the height progressions all the way across the sheet in advance or one height at a time as you go? • What if some athletes are entering at the opening height and the rest are entering much later?

  5. During the Event • Gather athletes and explain how they will be called for their attempt • “Mike will be up, Derrick is on deck, and Tim is on hold. Mike, you are up.” Make eye contact and start the clock for the attempt. • Stand on the runway or entrance to the cage or ring to prevent an athlete’s attempt until the pit or sector is ready • Record performances on the event sheet: • Verticals – Make (O), Miss (X), Pass (P) • Horizontals & Throws – Distance, Foul (F), Pass (P) • USATF only: Foul will be “X” and pass will be “—” • If there are multiple recorders, consistency is important… both in written and verbalcommunication • Announce marks or bar progressions clearly (two ways… “Thirty feet, six and one-half inch… Three zero, six, one half”)

  6. During the Event • During the third round for horizontal jumps and throws, circle best attempts; at end of round identify finalists and order of competition in the finals. Compare results with Recorder or other official, if possible. • At the end of each height for vertical jumps, compare results with Recorder then advise pit crew of next height. • For vertical jumps in NCAA & HS, determine if athletes are eligible and want to take run-thrus.If so, notify pit crew to remove bar.

  7. “Opportunity” for learning

  8. After the Competition • Compare final marks with other recorders or a second set of eyes from another official • Determine places based on best marks, using tie-breaker procedures • Places for combined event competitions are determined by points, therefore no places need to be assigned on the flight sheet • Record the time the event ended. Sign and write your officiating permit number.
