Higher Education in Europe • There are opportunities available in other countries for higher education apart from United States, these institutions can provide you with the kind of advantage that you expect in career development. • Getting visa have become increasingly difficult after 9/11, specially for students coming from this geographical region.

  3. Higher Education in Europe • Some basic questions: • From where should I start • Who is going to help me • How do I check the standard of institution • How can I get financial help • How should I tackle visa issues • What happens after I am done with admission and visa

Higher Education in Europe • Starting point: • Start with yourself and ask if you really want to pursue higher education, what advantage would you get out of that qualification ? • How well prepared you are, academically, for that challenge, and what are your achievements the program you are already pursuing ?

  5. Higher Education in Europe • Who is going to help: • Nobody • You are going to help yourself, however following sources can be used for appropriate information. • Internet • Universities • Some contacts

Higher Education in Europe • Standard of Institution: • In every country there is a rating system, every year the list is published which enlists briefly the criteria used for grading as well as the grades various institution got. • Then universities get themselves accredited with various organizations, you can ask the university about that also.

  7. Higher Education in Europe • Financial help: • There is extremely limited number of sources, that are available to international students. • However there are certain independent institutions that provide some help. universities also help depending on case to case basis.

Higher Education in Europe • Visa: • Follow instructions issued by concerned consulate. • Enclose as much information as required, do not attach document not required neither leave any document that is required. • Do not try to be smart, answer in precise manner what has been asked in interview. • Do not provide any false statement.

Higher Education in Europe • After admission and Visa: • Almost every university publishes a guide for international students, understand it completely. • If you need further information contact admission’s department and/or students union. • You can also contact people already studying there who you know personally.

Germany • Most universities have started offering courses in English and free of tuition fee. • Student is responsible for boarding, health insurance, food etc. • Usual expenditure per month is about 650 Euros. • Financial assistance can be sought from DAAD [German Academic Exchange Services] and / or private agencies in Germany.

Germany [Continued …] • General limit on age is between 18 and 32 years for most of the programs. • Previous academic achievements. • Confirmation of admission for B.Sc / Msc / a confirmation letter from professor for Ph.D. • Proficiency in English. • Relevance of course selected to home country.

  12. Germany [Continued …] • Daad has its regional offices all around the world. Usually they ask to contact with local offices. The nearest office of DAAD is in India. United Kingdom • United Kingdom is country of choice for simple procedures of educational institutions. • The student is allowed 20 Hr/week to work and getting a job is very easy. • It is easy and fast to get a student Visa converted to Work-Permit. • To be eligible for Permanent Resident of UK, the person needs to have 4 years of work or higher degree like Ph.D. • http://www.scit.wlv.ac.uk/ukinfo/alpha.html

United Kingdom [Continued …] • Visit www.jobs.ac.uk and subscribe the academic site of your field of interest. • Search the links for possible Scholarships, Fellowship, Assistantship, etc. • Make direct communication through e-mails with the Head of the Department, Postgraduate admission tutor and also the faculty members of area of your interest to get any financial help. • Even if you do not get any financial help, arrange for expenses for the first year, one can support him/herself very easily after getting there.
