Services involved in avalanche warning and accident prevention • METEOROLOGICAL SERVICE • Meteorological and specific snow observations • Weather Forecasting • Avalanche risk estimation – daily bulletins • Warnings in case of a high estimated avalanche risk • SALVAMONT (Mountain Rescue Team) • Monitorizing of important touristic risk area • Tourists information about risk conditions • Interventions in case of accidents • Acces forbidding – if necessary –in the areas with high risk (!)

Information dissemination Aims: • Information about the estimated avalanche risk • Tourists sensibilization: • Salvamont meeting with the touristic clubs – SKV Sibiu • Book launching: Mihai Tănase “Zăpada” (Snow), december 2006 • February 2007: initiation in individual avalanche protection equipments using • March and april 2007 : avalanche rescue procedures - specialised course for mountain rescue teams • May 2007: initiation in PIEPS equipments, products presentation, short presentation about avalanches • Conferrence about traumas – Sinaia: short presentation about avalanches

  6. Information dissemination In the mountaneous areas: • Warnings posters Mass-media: • Audio, visual and written media (intense mediatisation in the last year) • warnings • estimated risk and concerned areas • accidents

  7. Feed-back Phone – about meteorological conditions,estimated avalanche risk, state of the mountaneous rutes and skiing areas - to: • National Mountain Rescue Center • Regional Mountain Rescue Public Services (from the Făgăraş and Bucegi Mountain area) • Meteorological Services

Feed-back • Positive feedback : • A great number of callings for complete informations about: • snowstate and conditions • estimated risk level • accesible areas – restricted areas • restriction duration(especially in week-ends, legal free days and vacations) • Professional assistance demands on the high areas sport competitions • Negative feedback : • ignoring the warnings of the Mountain Rescue Teams and Meteorological Services – the march 7, 2007 avalanche in the Făgăraş Mountains

Future development • Extending the number of snow observation locations in other mountain massifs • Information based on observations made by the mountain rescue teams, in places were there are no meteorological stations • Displaying the nivo-meteorological bulletins in the starting points to the risk areas • Proper marking of the risk areas • Proper legislation about avalanches accidents prevention • Increasing the educational actions concerning the specific mountaneous conditions and risks, as well as the sportif and recreational activities in the mountain areas, through: • presentations on the specific sites (touristique, alpine, climbers, etc) • presentations in schools, high-schools and touristique clubs • mass-media
