  1. Bell Work • Have you ever felt confused because you didn’t understand a language? 2. What would you do if someone was telling you to do something in a language you didn’t understand?

  2. The Protestant Reformation 1500s - ?

  3. Setting the stage… • Early 1500s, the Catholic Church was very powerful • The Renaissance is in full swing • Holy Roman Empire (neither holy nor Roman) • Given power by Church • Support by many princes within empire • Church services held in Latin (language of the Romans)

  4. Martin Luther (1483-1546) Born to wealthy family…supposed to be a lawyer Decided to join clergy instead Visited Rome in 1510 What do you think he saw? (hint: Ninja Turtles) Not impressed with art of Renaissance Concerned with worldliness of the church Returned to Wittenberg (Germany) and began to lecture on the bible

  5. Johannes Tetzel (1465-1519) Worked for Catholic Church in Germany Great salesman Sold Indulgences What do you think these were? Indulgences = buying your way out of punishment in the afterlife How do you think Martin Luther felt about indulgences?

  6. 95 Theses (1517) 95 Theses = Luther’s argument against the sale of Indulgences Spread rapidly with the help of the printing press Diet of Worms (1521) Charles V (Holy Roman Emperor) demands that Luther recants Luther would not recant! Concordat of Worms (1521) Luther’s ideas condemned and he is excommunicated Luther is forced to go into hiding, translates Bible to German

  7. Luther’s Beliefs Church services should be held in the vernacular, not Latin! Sola Scriptura Read the Bible for yourself! Sola Fide Salvation by faith alone Good deeds do not equal salvation Priesthood of Believers Every Christian is a priest Everyone has connection to God, no clergy necessary

  8. Intermediate Closure: Think about the role of the Church in Europe up to this point…Why would the Catholic Church have a problem with Luther’s beliefs?Write this in your notes…

  9. Luther’s ideas led to… German Peasant Revolt (1524) Revolt of many German Princes in Holy Roman Empire Many of these princes converted to Lutheranism Saw an opportunity to become independent from Holy Roman Empire New Protestant religions across Europe (Beginning of Protestant Reformation) Calvinists Anabaptists Anglicans And many more! Catholic Church loses a lot of power in Europe!!

  10. Religion Tree • In your pods, draw and label a religion tree that includes all of the major religions we have covered • Put your names on it. I will be collecting these!
